Ammunition/Accuracy
Today I was at the range and had some problems sighting in my new rifle. I bought a new gun and scope and was trying to get it right on. I bought 1 box of Federal Premium 165 gr and 1 box of Federal Classic 165 gr. My goal was to get close with the classic and then fine tune with the premium, simply so I didn't spend $1+/shot just trying to get close. The gun was right on from the start with the classic, 5 shots in a row in the bulls eye, then I switched to the premium. 9 inches to bottom/left. I then went back to the classic and it was 9 inches to bottom/left and I never touched the scope or anything. So then I tried to get close again with the classic; 10 shots later I am there. Put the premium in and it is 14 inches bottom/left. Try the classic and it is 12 in. bottom/left. Its like the premium screwed up the entire accuracy of the gun. I left frustrated to go and buy some new ammo. Came back with Winchester X2 180 gr. and with some fine tuning fired 11 shots in a row within 1/4" of the bullseye. I have a Remington 7400 30-06, not bad groups for a semi-auto.
My question is if anyone else has had the same problems with Federal Premium Ammo? I specificly was using the 30-06 165 gr. trophy bonded bear claw (not high energy). Thanks.

This is a strange tale. It is not uncommon for different ammunition to shoot to a different point of impact, but in theory the same ammo should shoot to the same point of impact--unless something has changed. I would start by checking your scope mounts and rings to make certain that everything is tight. Then I would check the rifle's screws, including the large nut that holds the barrel to the receiver, for tightness. A last possibility, but nevertheless a possibility, is a bad scope. 0 -
I would believe this too except for once I bought the Winchester X2 ammo, the gun was right on 11 shots in a row. And on top of that it is a Leupold, which are of pretty high quality. The bottom line is that once I changed from Federal to Winchester, the problem stopped and the gun shot great. I was just wondering if shooting Federal did that for anyone else. 0 -
Double check your scope mounts! Make sure there tight.
