    There is no reason why you can't use the M84 on your M1A. The only practical way to mount a scope on an M1A is with a special M14-type mount (made by Springfield Inc, Brookstone, & a couple of others) which you are going to have to buy anyway; in addition, you will need to buy rings to attach whatever scope you use to the mount. The M84 requires a 7/8" ring.

    Having said that, you should be able to get $350-400 for the M84 if it is in excellent original condition with sunshade and eye cup. That might be enough to pay for a modern scope that will perform better.
