Help with a pre-war J.P. Sauer rifle
Hay Guys,
I recently got a pre-war bolt action rifle. It has double set triggers and a part round and part octagonal barrel with a full length solid rib. In a pocket on the rib the following is marked; "Mod. Mauser; J.P. Sauer & Son". The left side of the receiver ring is clearly marked, "2,67 9G. B.P." There are no other caliber markings anywhere on the action or barrel.
I measured the bore diameter at the muzzle and find it to be .307in. (7.79mm). The rifle will not chamber a 8 X 57 round.
Can anyone decipher the receiver marking or otherwise suggest what this may be chambered for?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Regards,
Steve

My best guess would be 30-06.... my book list that as a posible cal for this rifle, although 7x57 and 8x57 were most popular. .307 dia is probably just a tight .308 dia bore. I just tried an 8x57 in my 30-06 and it will not close. hope this helps.

Rich,
Thanks for the suggestion, but it won't close on the .30-06. The '06 is longer than the 8mm.
It's a puzzle.....?

Sounds like chamber casting is your last resort...... My book list that all continental calibers were available- whatever that means. Is the bolt face the right diameter for an 8x57 or 30-06? Maybe it was rebarreled to 308 win? 7.5 french, swiss? these would seem to me to be continetal calibers.
