MAS 49/56 Problem
I can't get my rife to cycle rounds from the magazine. After firing first round, bolt remains closed; extraction/ejection does not occur. I have tried different magazines and ammo. Any ideas? THANKS!

That's what you get when you try to shoot a French gun! They're not really designed for that type of extreme punishment.
Since I don't really know a thing about those rifles, lemme ask this, Is it a gas operated system?
Was the rifle used or new?
Is it possible that this is a grenade firing-type rifle? If so, isn't there a cut off switch preventing gas to be diverted into the normal operating system, instead channels allof the gas out the muzzel, launching the grenade.

Checked the gas valve. Caliber is 7.5. Round will cycle into chamber, fire, but next round doesn't get picked up. I'm using 150gr FNP.

Hmm. I was wondering if it was a .308 as these are notorious for jamming. The bolt remains closed after firing? As I recall, some of these rifles had the gas cut off, some didn't. If you have checked, you obviously know if that is the problem or not. What I would do next is try running a long pipe cleaner soaked in solvent down the gas tube followed by a blast of gun scrubber or similar product and obvserving if the tube fills up or the solvent runs out the barrel. If you have a plug up you may have to take apart the rifle. Assuming there is no obstruction, build up, etc., I am a bit stumped as this is a reliable, idiot proof rifle. Perhaps a weak recoil spring? I doubt this though if the first round strips and chambers. You say you have tried different types of ammo, may I ask which? If using handloads, what was the load? Can you manually pull the bolt back without undue force to extract the offending round?

Sheepman, I have had a MAS 49 and still have a MAS 49/56 and never had that, or any other type of trouble. I have an English traslation of the manual and here is what is said about your problem: JAMMING BY NON-EJECTION: "When not assignable to the ejector, due to fouling of the gas tube or leakage at the end of the gas tube, due to excessive wear from brushing or other factors such as lack of oiling. The cause of this leakage is not easily determined by the average soldier. The only solution is to send the rifle back to the State Arsenal to have the gas tube replaced". END OF QUOTE.
There are several other items that are shown as princpal causes of stoppages, but none fit your description. Give it a good cleaning as Jonk suggested and hope it works. If the tube is bad you are in for a major problem since I doubt there are any spare parts available or any service techs around. It sure sounds like a gas problem to me. I hope the cleaning does the job. Good luck my friend.
P.S. Don't you just "LOVE" posts from people who admit up front that they know nothing about your gun...but simply to take a quick poke at you while you're having trouble... just for the hell of it? True expert? I doubt it!

Sheepman, in order to demonstrate my new found sense of humor let me say that you, I, or anyone else who tossed away his hard earned money on ANY French firearm must be a fool! Now that it has been established that I too am a barrel of laughs, here is a full list of possible stoppages:
1- dirty rifle or magazine
2- magazine defect
3- ammunition defect
4- breakage of firing pin or ejector
5- the gas tube (as mentioned in my less humorous post)
6- premature hammer fall caused by trigger out of adjustment
7- and of course...it is French so what did you expect!

Merci, mes amis. Je pense que I'll clean this puppy again to try to narrow the problem down. I have a MAS 36 and a MAB PA-15 that have operated flawlessly for years. As for the 49/56, I've tried different ammo, different mags, and when I manually pull the bolt back, the expended case extracts just fine. Jonk: What's your handload?

Despite my fumbling lack of knowledge, and my rapier-like thrust of humor in your direction, I trust that you have recovered enough to solve this boggle?
Mark- While I respect the enormous amount of knowledge and wisdom you have imparted to us on a number of subjects, DWS hardly needs a champion.
Now having said that, wouldn't be safe to say, in regard to your second post-
1- dirty rifle or magazine >>DWS Changed mags, maybe the rifle is dirty.
2- magazine defect >>Again DWS Changed Mags
3- ammunition defect >>DWS Tried multiple types of ammo.
4- breakage of firing pin or ejector >>DWS made no indication of a Failure to fire,or improper extraction/double feed. According to his info, the bolt didn't move.
5- the gas tube (as mentioned in my less humorous post) >>Back to a dirty rifle, bad/dirty gas tube.
6- premature hammer fall caused by trigger out of adjustment>>Wouldn't there be a noticable premature/postmature ignition?
7- and of course...it is French so what did you expect!>>A NO BRAINER!!!!!!!
