Unfired S&W, is it M&P model?

Friend just bought a Smith and Wesson six inch barrel revolver with Smith & Wesson on one side of barrel and 38 S&W Special Ctg. on the other side. Serial number has a C 121xxx. It has no lanyard ring and no target sights. The front sight is thicker then early model S&W's.

According to blue book it may be an M&P model but can't tell if first or second by blue book. The gun may be unfired as there appears to be cosmoleen (sp?) aroung the front of the cylinder and no signs of wear due to firing. I don't think it is reblued.

  I have seen many S & W pistols that were new in the box from the factory. I never saw one covered in cosmolene as was used by the US Govt. IMO the terms "unissued" and "unfired" should never be used with documentation of the provenance of the gun.

  Thank you SaxonPig! As to the condition, we took it to the guy who now owns McCormicks Bluing here locally. He couldn't be sure but thought the barrel may have been reblued but the rest of the pistol was original. The gun is not for sale and my friend was just curious. The action and case hardening indicate very little use. Its really a nice pistol and he won't be opening it to clean or shooting it.
