will a remington 11-48 barrel fit & function on a remington sportsman 48?

As a buding gunsmith(5 years full time) I haven't run into many 48's(2) to be exact.The problem is O>K> with light loads,but with regular loads one or both links will come out of the follwer . I think since the action spring tension is what holds tha locking block up in place it is letting it unlock to soon and the bolt is moving back harder and the links are coming out.Your ideas would be appreciated. 0 -
G4-- Are you sure that the magazine cap is correct/correctly installed? I've shot a Sportsman '48 12 gauge since 1951 with every kind of load except 3 inchers which its not chambered for. Many, many thousands of skeet loads, thousands of duck loads including the old short 2-3/4" magnums. Another thing you might check is the recoil spring tube in the stock. Dis-assemble the gun and be sure that the tube is clean and corrosion free internally, give everything a light coat of oil and try it. can't think of any other thing much that would cause the problem. 0 -
OleDuk, Thanks for your thoughts. Yes the mag. cap is correct, and the recoil spring tube was a little dirty but not to bad. I have cleaned it ,but5 havent shot it yet. thank you again. 0 -
G4, don't mention it.Sure wish I could give you a solid answer. However, the question is, what would allow the bolt to outrun the recoil spring follower as the bolt goes forward? I've never had any real trouble with my gun, but consider as the barrel and bolt recoil the bolt latches back for an instant as the barrel unlocks and starts forward; as the barrel extension goes past the base of the fired shell the ejector hooks the rim of the shell, kicks it out, and continues into the battery position, and just prior to that releases a shell from the magazine-- the shell as it moves rearward might trip a latch as the M58 does, OR it might trip something in the trigger group which lets the bolt travel forward,etc., loading the next shell. (I'm not sure how it happens in the '48)
When you fire the gun you're working on, does the shell in the magazine get chambered correctly? Does the fired shell eject? I was wondering if the bolt is being held back properly which enables those things to happen, or not. I think it would be a good idea to have a dummy shell in the magazine when you're trying to test fire the piece so you don't wind up with a live round chambered and the gun out of control. The point I was getting at is that the only thing I can think of that would allow the bolt to outrun its recoil spring is the heavy operating spring that might be able to cause a still locked action and barrel to move forward fast enough to do so. It follows too that there might be a worn or broken part in the trigger group that's not working right.
These are a few more thoughts you might consider.
