22 LR Shotshell
I was at the store last week and seen some of this 22 LR Shotshell. I looked at it and thought it looked goofy as hell. I had to buy a box and try it out. Needless to say the groupings were terrible as expected and I cannot figure out what anyone would use this for. Is there any specific purposes for this load, because I cannot think of any? Totally a waste of money!

These little shot shells have a use for rat or pest control- but the charge is so small that you almost have to aim like you would using a regular .22 LR! The rifling really breaks up what "pattern" there is and most folks don't bother to use these little guys much. There were a number of .22 rifles which came from the factory with smooth bores and were intended to use nothing but these shot loads. Remington's 572 Fieldmaster pump and their 580 single shot come to mind- no doubt there are others.

works good for taking pest birds out of a barn sparrows, starlings and ect also works good for the neighbors hard calving bulls that are visiting the yearling heifers :-)

many people load the first round of there "home defense" pistol with a shot load. the idea being that if you hit them with a shot load, and they keep coming they are fair game.
i think marlin, mossberg and savage made smoothbore .22 bolt action rifles that had a small trap thrower attached to the barrel.you would release the "target" and then track it and shoot it. one of these devices claimed you could use ritz crackers or necco wafers as targets.
the other guys are correct in that a .22 LR shot load makes a great pest killer. you can easily and safly dispatch snakes and birds with this load. many modern manufacturers still offer a "garden gun". marlin still sells them.its also great for popping balloons or knocking down cans.
What other dungeon is so dark as ones own heart, what jailer so inexorable as ones own mind.0 -

I get a pattern of about 1" pattern per foot of distance from the muzzle with the winchester all brass cases. They will break hand thrown clay bird if you can hit them within 6-7 yards.... also good for shoot through walls at pests as they do not over penetrate.

Wander down to your favorite gun shop and pick out a good single stot ans have the barrel bored out like you were going to sleeve it.That's all you need.I'll never forget the cat that was hit by a car that I tried to dispatch with 22 shot.Nine shots later I had to stomp the poor thing to put it out of it's misery.They are good for defense if you load it first.shoot for the eyes.Surprising how trhe fight goes out of the meanest HOMBRE when they can't see.Then finish him off.Sound cruel,well, comes the time I pull a gun it will be a fight to the death.The courts turn them loose.Not me,I'd finish the job.Hope it never happens again.But if it does,i'll do the same thing.Too many worthless bums around.

Just in case there is anybody reading who decides to be humane and load a 22 LR shotshell as a " Warning Round " in a home defense weapon. Don't try it in any auto loading firearm. It will end up jamming and your warning shot will be your only shot. Those little pellets in front of that little charge don't build up enough pressure to operate the action. Just thought that was worth mentioning.
Also, I tried the .22 shot shell for pests. I think a flyswatter is better. I suspect it wouldn't stop a snake very fast either, unless it was a very lethargic and harmless one you wouldn't mind getting very very close to before firing, in which case you should just trust the snake to be a much better pest controller than your 22 shotshell.0 -
The .22LR Shot-cartridges are for .22's with no rifling in the barrel.
For instance Ansh?tz makes a few models of .22's with no rifling, for pest control.
They are supposed to work like a very very tiny shotgun and not in a rifled .22LR rifle.
The groupings you mention, is because the shot is actually spread out more then it would in a barrel with no choke, cylinder bore.
I think you might know the 9mm-shot cartridge, it's not a cartridge for a pistol - it's for a small shotgun, only bigger than the .22.
I used that 9mm-shot quite a lot, but birds at over 15-20 yards/metres would just get a scare and a brushoff.
Cats could be killed at short distances (like 3-5 metres MAX!).
The .22 LR Shot cartridge doesn't break up the tiles in your kitchen like a 12 gauge would.
It's also great for youngsters shooting at practisetargets or youngsters doing some plinking of cans.

We use them to keep pigeons out of the barn. Works great for us in a Marlin lever gun. Knocks em right of the rafters and doesn't penetrate the tin roof.
Taxation WITH representation isn't so hot, either!0
