heavy v. regular barrel
I am considering buying a Savage bolt action in either 223 or 22-250 and am undecided between the regular barrel and the heavy barrel. The regular barrel is cheaper and, of course, lighter, but I wonder what effect overheating has on its accuracy for bench rest shooting. I would appreciate any input and suggestions.

Heavy Barrel for bench rest both will heat up but the heavy will whip less and should produce better accuracy, If economy is a consideration then the .223 is less expensive and good out to 600 yds. twist is important 1-7 for heavy bullets 70-80gr. will use about 1/2 the powder of 22-250 don't know if savage offers rifle in 6-br but that is THE bench rest caliber see guys shoot baseball size groups at 600 all day with that one 0 -
If you are interested in BR shooting it doesn't make a flip whether it's heavy or light if you think you can buy a factory gun and just head out to the local BR match and do great things! BR is another realm of shooting altogether! Now if you just want a gun that shoots small groups (say 1/2 inch) then the heavy barrel Savage might fill your bill but if you want "screamers", under 1/10 inch you're gonna pay for that! GHD 0 -
I would agree that you aren't going to be competitive at benchrest with a factory rifle. If you just want to shoot from a bench rest for fun, go with the .223 heavy barrel. The main reason is economy. The secondary reason is .223 will not heat up the barrel as quickly and require less cooling time.

OK - "Humble"
My 40xbr in 22-250 will shoot sub 2's a 100, I know its a bench gun.
But for a varmint gun its worth the price! you can easley pick off a ground Squirrel a 600+ the savages are good to. Go the extra mile and get a REM 40Xbr last price I had seen was about $13000 -
