Ruger Single six, converted how do I tell?

My wife just recently received her fathers Ruger Single Six convertable, serial #191xxx. How can I tell if this handgun was sent in and converted to the safer model? Or should I just send it in to Ruger and have them check it out?

  If it uses a half-cock position to rotate the cylinder, it is NOT converted. If you unlock the cylinder to rotate (for loading) by opening the recoil shield plate, then it HAS been converted. Originals had three screws through the frame, in converetees, they are relaced with rivits or pins

  Ok thanks: I do have to put it on half cock to rotate the cylinder, and it still has the three screws. Guess I better contact Ruger and get it converted.

  Pabooger King 999 is correct and Ruger will update your gun for free.And if you request they will send your old parts back with your gun.Very nice gun by the way!

  Be sure and tell Ruger you want the original parts back.They are valuable to collectors.

  Being as that this is an older model do you think I should keep it the way it is?

  I would put it away as a family keepsake and not shoot it anymore.Go buy a new model to shoot.

  Just my 2 cents I would have it upgraded and if you want to put it back do so.The reason being when the gun is past on to your children or Grandchildren it will be in safe working order.That would be for their safety.

  I guess I am in the minority, but I have never considered the older model Ruger pistols to be unsafe. If you you spend $1500 for a new Colt single action, you will find that it works the same way. It is just a matter of safe gun handling. Ruger started this conversion program to avoid law suits. I have 3 old models that I have had for years and would not consider having them converted. I guess I have this opinion since I started out with the older guns and learned to only load 5 rounds if I was not going to immediately fire it.

  I have to agree with Pearyw!! leave the gun the way it was made, just keep a empty one under the hammer
