Value - Springfield Armory M-1 Garand

A buddy of mine has a M-1 Garand made by Springfield Armory. He says he bought it 20 years ago and never fired it. The SA website quotes a MSRP of $1061. I don't know what an appropriate offer would be.

  That depends on a lot of things. An all matching WW2 Garand in excellant condition could be worth that price. On the other hand, a rebuilt non matching rifle is only worth half of that in VG shape. CMP is selling their arsenal grade Springfield Garands for around $500 or $525 (I forget off hand); however, collection grades are much higher. So again, it depends on matching serials, condition, and age. Methinks I also remember hearing something about Springfield making these for sale directly to the public (non surplus), though I might be way off. If so, I have no clue on price for those.

  I am working on the assumption that this M1 was made by Springfield Armory Inc., the commercial firm from IL and not the former government arsenal. To purchase this rifle new from SA today would cost the afore mentioned $1061 retail or $849 dealer.
  
  As Jonk mentioned, the CMP is selling M1 rifles which start at around $400 for a rebuilt Springfield and go up to $950 for a post-war Collector Grade (correct parts & stock) Springfield. WWII collector rilfes are not available and such correct rifle brings VERY BIG premiums over the $1061 price asked for the commercial rifle.
  
  I am an M1 fanatic and my choice would be to pony up the $950 for a CMP Collector Grade post-war rifle. It will hold its value much better over the years because there will NEVER be any more built at the old arsenal. Springfield Inc. can keep making their own M1 Garands for another 50 years and a rifle purchased 20 years ago from that firm will be in competition with the newer rifles the company continues to make today. Did you notice that your friend quoted you TODAYS retail price for a rifle he purchased 20 years ago? What is the exact difference between the product 20 years ago verses today? What will be the difference between the products 20 years from now? These are only my opinions and I know far more about the military M1 Rifles than the commercial copies made today.
