38super to 45acp

If I can remember correctly, a few (maybe twenty) years ago, there was an article in Guns and Ammo about caliber conversions using the Colt frame. I believe the article said they used the 38 super because it was the simplest. If they had used the 45ACP they would have had problems with the extractor. I may still have the issue around somewhere and I will look. Maybe someone else here has a better memory and storage system than I do and can get back to you quicker with what was involved.

I have more then 1 45 and find myself shooting those more then the super , yes the 38super is a great round and has more engery then the 45acp , but my reloader seems to be stuck on the 45acp , just think it would be better to have my best pistols all shoot the same cal. , finding a top end is cheaper then buying a new Colt 45acp , and I like my 70s Commander , why not change it to shoot what I use the most ( can allways change it back )........ Thanks ......."C"

Yep, whole new slide. The breech face is different, the firing pin is smaller on the .38, the extractor is diferent. You may be able to modify the ejector you have.

YES A HOLE TOP END AND A 45 EJECTOR IS IN ORDER.THE EJECTOR MAY HIT YOUR PRIMER WHEN EJECTING A LIVE ROUND AND THAT IS NOT A GOOD THING. ALSO THE 38 EJECTOR IS TO CLOSE IN AND WILL NOT EJECT WELL EVEN IF THE FRAME CLEARS IT. ANY MORE QUESTION CALL 217-585-1911

If you do decide to convert, what are you going to do with the 38 Super parts? I might be interested.
