Trued Action ?

Does any body have experience with trueing their action? I have heard it improves accuracy, and am wondering if so by how much. i will be talking to my gunsmith(speedy at SG&Y in Ft worth)friday, and want to know more about it. i would be doing it to a pss in .308

  This question will generally guarantee many different answers since everyone has an opinion on this term "trueing" or "blueprinting".
  
  Simply put, the term suggests that the gunsmith or machinist brings all of the various areas of a receiver into straight and perpendicular lines in order to increase accuracy. The full blown version has the bolt bore reamed, the bolt bushed for a tighter fit, the front of the receiver faced square, threads re-cut, and the lug seats re-cut and lapped. I may have missed a small part but this is the jist of it. The important thing is that Speedy is a Master Machinist (tool & die maker) and knows exactly what to do based on what you want to get back and how much you want (or don't want) to pay. By the way, there is no way that accuracy from this process can be foretold. There are way too many other variables to take into account. I will suggest that you replace your factory barrel with one from the list of custom barrel makers as it will be money well spent so far as accuracy is concerned. Speedy can look at your barrel and council you. The chamber may not be exactly straight, the threads may be off, etc.

  Haven't done this on a commercial riflebut will agree that it is worth while when rebarrelling military mausers. Have had the front action ring trued and found that the barrels come out aligned well with the action and the scope ring holes line up with the bore better than just screwing a new barrel in.

  maggie, nononsense has alot of good points. In todays world of mass producing of gun parts the way of the craftsman is lost. The parts are not always true. If you get a good gunsmith to do it, then yes it will improve it. Just something to think about.

  nononsense, That was one of the most concise answers to this question I've ever seen! You hit all the right spots! As far as the PSS barrel goes, I know of 6 that have been unshot takeoffs and new match barrels used! These guys wanted the best possible accuracy without the whole gun deal. When they were returned they could have won a lot of BR matches some years ago!! All shoot in the .2's and even some "screamers", (under .1) GHD
