Colt ssa peacemaker

I would like to know when the first peacemaker was made. Was the old ssa's simply called the peacemaker or were they actually stamped on the barrel? I know the later guns were stamped but just don't know when it was started

  JW, The only Colt Peacemaker that I know of is there single action 22s. They are marked Peacemaker. The first year of production was 1970. They were discontinued in 1977.

  JW, I forgot that in the 1980s they make a Peacekeeper.

  The Colt people need to do some research. While the Thuer cartridge conversion of 1868 preceded the 1873 Single Action Colt, the 1872 was actually the first large frame Colt revolver for a standard centerfire cartridge. It used many of the parts of the 1860 Army but was not a conversion. It fired the Colt 44 (actually 45 caliber). This was a centerfire cartridge shooting a heel type bullet. Bullet and case were the same diameter in order to fit existing Army cylinders and barrel bores.
  The Single Action Army of 1873 was designed in 1872. Prototype testing by the Army took place in November 1872 with shipment of s/ns 1-176 on 9/2/73.
  Richards and Richards & Mason cartridge conversions of all Colt percussion revolvers were available beginning in 1873. They used standard cartridges.
  There was no Peacemaker marking on first or 2nd generation pistols.
  Frontier Six Shooter was acid etched on 44-40s in 1878 which later changed to roll marking. Colt Single Action Army was roll marked on revolvers beginning in 1930.

  Thanks fellows for the answer's. I had a friendly argument with a friend who said that you couldn't buy a peacemaker, that they quit making them in the 1800s. I personally own a 22 sa peacemaker that I shoot all the time. The more I got to thinking about it I realized that I had never seen a Colt with a peacemaker stamp except the 22's like I own, and the name was just a nickname of the old guns. Maybe this will satisfy him on the facts. Thanks again.
