remington 722 257 roberts
have a chance too buy a remington 722 in 257 roberts.tjis gun has the old stith mount and b&l 4x scope.this is the setup where all the adj is in the mount.this isnt the pretty remington its the plain stock .gun is in 90%+,feew hunting nicks but blueing is in great shape.what is this gun worth ?and what do you think of the caliber?thanks

I just bought a Remington 722 in a 257 Roberts. I have never had anything to do with a Remington 722 or a 257 Roberts.
I took this rifle out to shoot it and when I loaded it the first 2 bullets went in the magazine real good. When I put the 3rd bullet in it wanted to go in crooked. And there is no way I can get a 4th in.
Does anyone know the magazine capacity of theses rifles? Should I be having trouble with the 3rd round going in the magazine?0 -
For the plain Jane in perfect condition, not over $350-400. The scope and mount may be worth a little, but I would assume they would have to be replaced and offer on the value of the rifle alone. 0 -
300-320 for gun alone as the 257 adds about 20% to the value. As HEDOG said the scope will probably need replacing and somebody might even buy it! GHD 0 -
I think that this an excellent rifle for deer. My wife,Wind Dancer,has used a Remington 722 in caliber 257 Roberts, bought in 1954 with a Weaver 4X scope to take many deer useing hand loaded 117gr. bullets. Why must the scope be replaced? Just because it is old? If the optics are clear and everything works,why not just use it? In my area you could get $350-$400 for this rifle anytime. 0 -

Iroquois Scout, the scope may not have to be replaced, and indeed I have some from the '60's at least on rifles. My experience with older scopes bought on guns (particularly those with external adjustments in the mounts)has been that they must be replaced. Usually they do not group at all well. Also, it is certain the optics and coating will not be up to todays standards, thus I suggested assuming they would be a write-off needing to be replaced. Don may be a lucky sort and they will be fine, but I would not offer based on the assumption that the scope will be a prize. 0 -
I am using a couple of B&L scopes I bot over 40 years ago, mounted in Kuharsky bases. They are working just fine. Harvested 3 deer, 2 antelope, this fall with my Mauser custom Roberts Improved. Wouldn't be throwing the glass away just because it has age. Weight is the bigger factor, if you will be having to pack, as the adjustable mounts are heavy. GW. 0
