.410 shotgun (again)
Alright, so the .45 is out. Thank you for saving my old gun and possible my life. Now the next question is what in the hell do you do with a .410 shotgun. Shells are hard to find and it seems kinda pointless. Let me know please if you guys know of anything worth wild that you can do with a .410

Do you live and hunt in a city????If not you can take all sorts of game with a 410 if you do your part and get good with it.There are fewer pellets in the 410 but remember they travel just as fast as does the 12,16,20,28,not to mention 10 ga.and so it is limited most by the shooter.I use it for quail,dove early,grey squirrel,ducks over deeks.Then there are all of the nongame animals that are abundant. Ground squirrel,skunk,oposseum,starlings,crows,rats,wild domesticated cats.I know several guys who shoot nothing but 410s a skeet and beat the pants off most shooting the larger gauges.Don't sell the 410 short,it is not for the lazy shooter but is for he who practices enough to get,and stay good.I have found,for me,that since the guns for the 410 are so light that I shoot much better with a heavier gun.So I have an over-under that I converted to 410 via Savage 410er tubes.The tubes slip into the chambers of the twelve gauage and use the same extractors as the original barrels.I also have a sideXside set up the same way.Nice thing about it you can slip them out and go back using the original shells.I hope this clears up any misconceptions you might have gotten from EXPURTS.I darn sure am not one of them,just a gun lover.Bill

Sorry if I seem down on my .410 because I'm not. I like it very much but I live with 4 guys who own 12 gauges and I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle defending my gun. 0 -
Gee,don't feel bad,just get out there and practice.The most important thing is to have confidence.Only practice can give you that.I am well aware that shells are expensive,but reloading also builds confidence.
To begin loading is with a book,read it and then go looking for your outfit.That way you grow past the dumb question phase and right into intelligent ones.Good luck.

I hope we did not give you the impression that the 410 is worthless because it is not. They take some practice to master but can be a fine gun for doves, quail, grouse,pigeon, squirrel, rabbits and small pests. Some guns shoot slugs fairly well and can be used for larger game like fox and coyotes. Shells are on the expensive side but if you plan on shooting and practicing a lot a reloader will pay for itself in a hurry (though hulls can be hard to find). I have gotten back into the 410 through a TC encore 45/410 with a 12" barrel and shoot at hand thrown clay pigeons and have a blast. 0 -

Indiana just opened deer season with the 410 being a legel gun for the first time the improvement in slug preformance makes it quite leathel within range about 75 yards the 3 in shell can be reloaded with different size buck shot(000),(00),#2,#4 shot and make a dandy self defence load.And like the rest of the folks say when loaded with bird shot it makes a fine gun for upland game. Shoot it injoy it if you are concerned what your friends think, go buy a 12ga. and keep the 410 it's a good excuse to get another gun. 0 -
The .410 is a horrible ist choice gun but I really love it on days when I just want to take a walk and not necessarily shoot something and I do want to carry a shotgun. My special favorite is an older Savage 311 w/walnut stock, I also have a nice Win 37 and a walnut stocked Steven's 59. A winchester 42 would be great, but I'll need more $$$. For reloading I've always used a Lee Loader and it does a great job as long as you use the same shells that you've fired previously in the chamber. For fun, 4 number 4 buckshot will slide down a 3"hull and are pretty awesome. Also, don't underestimate the patterning of a 2 1/2 inch shell with 7 1/2 or 8 shot. It really does well; I don't ever use no. 6 shot; you're better off with the high pellet count of small shot since you need to stay under 28 yards. Haave fun. 0 -
I have a great deal of respect for the .410 shotgun.As a teen I had and still do a Winchester Model 37A.I harvested many bushytails and several rabbit with the gun.I even killed one Deer with it,back then we called them punkin balls.Today their slugs,I guess I shot the full choke out of it.But it didnt hurt the way it shot.I would also consider slugs or todays Buckshot in it for home Defense.As far as ammo goes whereI live its available almost any where that sells ammo.I have bought two .410s for my self this year.I think it is an amazing gun and it still has a Place in todays market.I think its a great starter gun for young ones.I have seen people let 10yr olds shoot a 12 GA as their first gun,and almost ruin them because of the recoil.The child may have no desire to shoot that gun again.I will start them out on a .410 and they adjust slowly and want to shoot.Thats where you may want to move up to a 16 or 12 GA with field loads.Those .410 shells are a little pricy.

After my other post I went to the shop to get some w-231 and looked at the new 410 slugs they still have the old forester type slugs but now the new slugs are sabboted bullits I was unaware of this,so to make a long story short this question has renewed my intrest in the 410 and I bought some. So like everything else in the U.S.A the 410 is now NEW&IMPROVED. 0 -
Altight, I have a new respect for the gun my Granddad gave me. My next question is about slugs and sabots. Which one of theses can I fire with my smooth bore barrel. Also, If you could give me a name of someone that makes a sabot or slug round so I could order some.
