I've been keeping an eye open for a Chicom M14S, I was wondering...

I think Fulton Armory, as part of their rebuild on these, say they install a M14 flash hider (without the bayonet lug). Installing a flash hider would only give you one "evil" feature, nto the two it takes to make an assault rifle. Is that acceptable on a Chicom? Or, are they installing enough US made parts that the flash hider becomes acceptable?

  Good to see you're still around.Are you planning on buying one of the 2002 LEGP rifles?My local dealer just started stocking DPMS rifles,don't look too bad.What's your O2?

  Flashider is NOT OK with the detachable mag I believe.
  This is not my area of expertise though.
  I have a box full of FH,most with the bayonet lug.
  Fulton does good work but is way too expensive for me.
  Most of their work is unnecessary but the website and press they put out is considered Gospel.Kind of like if someone prints a fact here it is considered true.Or if read in one of the so called gun rags.
  I believe folks should try stuff instead of reading and believing these rumors and hogwash.

  I know the 1994 assault weapons law, by itself, really doesn't apply to the Chinese rifles, as they have their own set of laws that need to be complied with. In particular the 1989 ban. It wouldn't make sense that, on a Chicom, changing the fake flash hider out with a real one would be legal in and of itself. And of course, both the flash hider and bayonet lug would cause it to fall into the assault weapons category.
  
  Fulton does say they install a MIL-SPEC flash hider on their rebuilt Chicoms. My guess is that if enough US made parts are added, it would be acceptable to add one "evil" feature (but not two). For example, it's acceptable to install a pistol grip on a MAK-90 if enough US made parts are added. It stands to reason that, with the M14S, it would be acceptable to add one of the assault weapon features if enough US parts were added, and Fulton probably adds enough US parts as part of their rebuilds.
  
  I am keeping an eye open for an M14S, based on your opinion of them. There was one drifting around the gunshow isles last summer for $500.00 but I didn't have the money for it. This last weekend, there was one for $650.00, just a bit too much for me. Next show here is in January, I hope I can find one reasonably priced then.
