Winchester Model 1890 in WRF
I have 2 winchester model 90s one is the octagonal barrel #499xxx in .22 WRF, this one has been refinished in mat black w/nice wood. The other one looks almost like a 1906 model because it has a round barrel, with no markings on the barrel. WRF Stamped on the frame under the barrel/load tube with some numbers "30" and "88" and a triangular symbol it's ser.# is 317xxx. Any info on dates of manufacture for these 2 rifles???? Also is the 2nd one a model 1906 or a 90 with a replacement barrel? Both have the 90 crescent butt plates.

#499xxx was manufactured between June and July 1912. #317xxx between April and May 1907. The 1907 rifle should have an A under the serial # on the bottom of the reciever. This was the way Winchester told them apart. The round barrel is undoubtably a replacement. If you compare the two rifles length of shell carrier (lifter) you can determine if both are WRFs by the length. I know a lot of 1906s have had 90 stocks retrofitted but it sounds like both of yours are model 9o's.
Also Wrf ammunition won't fit up into the spring feed tube of a standard 22S,L,LR. After 95 or so years I think that every combination of parts on 90s, 06s, and 62As has been tried. I have a 90 that is put together with two different serial #s and a Marlin barrel. I had a guy tell me that was impossible, but I've shot it for years.

Thanks Wundudnee - There is an "A" on the 499xxx on the bottom of the receiver (1912) and no letter on the 316xxx (1907).

Winchester put the A under the serial # in 1907 sometime after they modified the 1906s to accept all 22s, S,L,LR. I just got out one of my 90s serial# 283xxx and it doesn't have the A under it. Also they went from the model 2 reciever with hidden locking lugs to the model 3 rec. with outside locking lugs in 1907. Mine also has the WRF stamped into the front of the receiver. I would still bet yours is a 90. The loading port is higher on the magazine and is longer than one chambered for S,L,LR. If you compare both rifles the loading port should be the same heighth and the shell lifters should be the same depth.
To further confuse you the 1911 patent date on your newer rifle was for the collar on the end of the loading tube to make the tube stronger. The older one should be smooth clear to the end. HTH
