SKS Gas tube question......
How is the gas tube removed from the wood portion on the SKS rifle? I'm changing one of my rifles to a folding stock, and am not sure how to remove the tube or if it would be easier to just buy a spare and attach it to the short nylon forestock on top of the rifle.

I had the same problem last month. There is a pin that has to be removed. It was very hard to see on my sks, its kind of blended in smooth. The pin holds the metal cap, on the rear part of the gas tube. When you remove the pin, the end cap comes off, then the wood.

Look at the pin which is riveted in and decide which end is peened less. You can dremel the peened portion off carefully or just drive it through. If you drive it through, you can expand the hole it goes through and the handguard won't hold tight. If you're careful, you can get the pin out and be able to use it again by reshaping the end and peen it again. A little lock tite will help secure a loose pin.

Kinda what I thought, in regards to the pin. Sounds like I'm better off just getting a new tube and manufacturing that top handguard to go with that stock set.

Save your money and do it yourself. Clean the area with steel wool or emery cloth to help locate the pin. 0 -
I intend on doing it myself, the issue is that, the Zytel, or whatever "space age" plastic this stock set is made of, top forestock included with the set does not have a gas tube attached. I figure that it's most likely easier to build one for that set than to tear apart a factory fitted assembly and try to re-pin it. I'd also like to keep the original stock set the same because it is numbered and matching to the rest of the rifle.
