pistol for left-hand shooters
I have been milling around trying to find the best pistol for a lefty. My Glock 17 is decent and the Colt 1911-A1 is pretty good, but there has to be a gun or two out there that does not have a right hand dominant bias. What do you feel is the best pistol for a left hand shooter? Overall performance, ease of use, operating controls, grip configuration etc... Any gun, any caliber, any mods, it does not matter. I just would like to hear your opinions. Thanks

This is unfortunately a right-handed world as far as design goes. I've never found this to be a serious problem in terms of guns though. My Colt 1911 is fitted with an ambidextrous safety and magazine release and that takes care of my primary concerns.
The simple fact of the matter is that most guns are not going to be a perfect fit out of the box with all of our expectations regardless of the primary hand. Most skilled shooters eventually change sights, grips and get a trigger job to make the gun more friendly to their tastes. Us lefties need a bit more patience and maybe some more dollars to get things in the appropriate southpaw orientation.

Randall made a complete reverse image 1911 in several calibers and sizes. These 'lefties' are hard to find and have a good bit of collector interest. Of the current makers I think the H&K USP variant and the Walther/S&W 99 do well for a leftie.

I am a right hander... I purchased the most beautiful pair of N.American stag grips you ever saw, for a pre-27 S&W N-frame... I put them on and they really felt strange... A friend shot a few rounds, and also felt it was strange..He looked closely and the palmswell was on the correct side for a left-handed shooter.... I'm going to have to find a lefty with an N-frame... 0 -
As a fellow southpaw, I have the following guns that seem to work: A left handed Randall, Walther P5, HK USP, HK P7-M8, P7-M13 and P7-M10, and Sig P-220 with bottom mag release. I realize some are out of production. I manage to use a Browning HP with ambi safety release for IDPA. I can hit the slide release and mag release with my fore finger without changing my grip. Can't quite manage the Colt 45.
If you do find a Randall, try to get one of the earlier production versions. The later ones I am told were rushed through production and some steps may have been skipped.0 -
Thank you for all the advise. I enjoy shooting revolvers because of the lack of operating controls as opposed to an auto. The Randall will most likely be out of my price range. The H&K or the Hi-power seem like likely choices though. Thanks again. 0
