Browning A-Bolt Medallion / .257

I have an opportunity to purchase a Browning A-Bolt Medallion rifle in .257 with a Weaver scope for $500 in like-new condition. The father of my best friend has gotten too old and infirm to hunt (a shame) and he is getting rid of his firearms. I've known the father for 40 years and he takes excellent care of his guns, so I don't have any worries in that department. Does anyone know if that's a fair price?

Also, checking the Browning web site, I don't see ".257" listed as one of the calibers for this rifle, so I am a bit confused. Does this caliber go by another name? Is it the ".257 Weatherby" that is supposed to be very flat and accurate? Is it a discontinued caliber for Browning? Are cartridges reasonably available? You can see I am full of questions; any information will be appreciated.

    Yes,I think its a real bargain for a good gun and a great caliber.You also add the price of the weaver scope,and you have a more than fair price.

    Blue Book, Gun Trader's Guide and Modern Guns show this as .257 Roberts.
    Value 8 or 10 years ago was around $300 in good condition, more in higher grades.

    Gordian, I have a medallion in 7mm-08, and can honestly say that for a sporter barrel, "pretty gun", it shoots great. I payed $525 for mine used, as it had been fired 17 times. I got 23 bullets for it and a Bushnell trophy scope as well. I would say $500 is a decent price.

    A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

    Hi Boomerang, I don't have an exact idea about the scope, but I am guessing it's a basic decent model. I haven't even looked at the gun yet. I don't think I would want to sell it because in addition to being just a gun of a certain type, I would like to remember my best friend's father and the good times we had fishing, playing cards, etc. while I was growing up. I just wanted to check to see if the price was about right -- fair to both sides -- and that I would be able to get the ammo at not too bad a price. I saw some .257 Roberts at Cheaper Than Dirt for a bit less than $1 each in boxes of 20, so that's not too bad, although I've been spoiled by 9mm and .22 LR ammo prices. I understand it's not the same league.

    JustC, I think "my" gun has also not been fired too many times -- just to zero the scope. I also think he'll throw in whatever ammo he has left. So my deal looks like about the same as yours, assuming that the scope isn't just ... junk. I doubt it would be because the man was an avid hunter until his knees gave out.

    Don't let my signature make you think that was a reply to your post. Sometimes,...I think people take offense and think it was addressed to them when in fact, it wasn't. It's just my current signature.

    If that scope is one of the newer weavers, it is no doubt clear and dependable for the money. I think the newer ones have come a long way in the quality dept.

    You will enjoy that rifle, it's nice and light, and balanced extremely well. A great woods and stalking rifle.

    GB - You are really going to like this cartridge. I have its bigger brother the 7mm Mauser. The .257 Roberts is considered as one of the best all around cartridges to ever come down the pike, and with mild recoil. On top of that, the A-Bolt Medallion is a very beautiful rifle. I collect Browning rifles and the Medallion is one of my favorites.

    BTW, it is very admirable of you to want to keep this gun to remind you of your best friend's father.

    P.S. - Oh yeah I forgot, Weaver makes great scopes for the money. The 3x9-38mm is one of the best low price scopes I have encountered. The eye relief is very forgiving along with a good reticle and clarity.
