Remington 742
I was wondering if any one had any pics of the damage cause by the bolt in the reciever of the 742. As a reference of what to look for.

My wife has a Remington 742 that is backing out primers. It has sentimental value to her.I've had several gunsmiths tell me they can't get parts or don't want to look at it. Don't know if it was bought new or not. We have only put a couple of hundred rounds through it. Last gunsmith did at least take it apart and clean it better than I did. Trotline weight? Wall hanger? Give it to one of the local gangs so it will blow up in their face? 0 -
I have an early model that I inherited from my father-in-law. He loved it for his yearly whitetail hunt. He never had any problems at all. He also never had a shot longer than 100yds. He never shot more than 5-10 rounds a year for 25yrs. It did serve him well, but I don't get the accuracy I want with it. I understand the 742 had some problems that were addressed in the 7400 and Model 4s. It is much heavier and less accurate than my M70 featherweight that I prefer. 0 -
there are two main problems with the 742's, the bolt lock failing are the bolt cutting 'teeth' into the receiver, and the bolt face breaking away resulting in the extractor failing. neither problem is fixabe (economiclly). if you have a 742 keep it clean, if you don't-good. 0 -
I bought one with 4x redfield for 100.00 No accuracy 3to4 inch at 100 yds.. I sold gun for 40.00 and Scope and ring on ebay for 60.00 I didn't lose any money, but ammo...MIKE WISKEY state all problems 0 -
I have gooten mine to shoot 1 1/2inch groups at a hundred, it seems to be picky on bullet wieght, try 150 and 165 wouldnt go heavier than that. and be sure the forearm screw on the end is kept very tight. It will change piont of impact if it becomes loose. The only bad part is now I am in PA and Its not leagal to hunt with here.
