Lead versus Jacketed Load Question
I've noticed that bullets of the same weight and shape often get rather different powder loads in depending on whether they are lead or jacketed. Unless the load is specifically a +P or high velocity one, is there any real reason for lead to go with a lighter charge than its jacketed version.

I believe it is due to the hard jacket, jacketed bullets require a larger charge to obtain similar velocities obtained by the softer lead. 0 -
Lead bullets can not be driven as fast a jacket bullet, because of leading the barrel, I use lead in all my pistols. less ware and a lot cheaper and very acc. 0 -
The claim is that hot charges fuse lead bullet bases and screw up accuracy. Additionally, plain lead bullets if driven too fast can strip the rifling on the bullets and be very inaccurate.
Plated bullets such as the Speer as well as gas check bullets can be driven beyond handgun velocities. They work very well because the very thin, soft, copper plated jackets on a soft lead core allow them to upset at slower handgun velocities.0 -
Generally, it's best to keep lead bullets to subsonic velocities....less than 1100 feet per second, to prevent a lead buildup in the bore of your gun.
For hotter loads, use jacketed, semi-jacketed, or gas check bullets.0 -
Don't believe that fallacy about keeping lead bullets below 1100 FPS. I start lead pistol bullets of of my hunting handguns at 1400 to 1500 FPS. Granted these are gas checked bullets and hard cast to a BHN of about 20. I also have driven this same manufacturer's rifle bullets to about 2600 FPS from rifles.
