    By "best" I guess you mean ammo. I have a 590 loaded with 7 1/2. Other guys may go a load one way or another with that. Great gun BTW.

    One of the best answers I've seen in a long time. And correct for the following reasons...

    Assuming you mean "inside" protection, then it's safe to figure a range of no greater than 7 yds. and usually much less. That's confrontation on a very personal level and a load of birdshot at that range is deadly.

    A target with the body bulk of a human will absorb the entire shot column. There will be splatter, but not much scatter.

    A miss or near miss will result in a number of pellets scattering downrange of your shot. They will carry comparitively little energy and pose little danger beyond a sheetrock wall.

    And for the intruder hiding behind that sheetrock wall... The first shot will create an enormous hole in the wall. The second will create an enormous hole in him!

    Let's all hope it never comes to that.
