Greetings,
Is HK SL8-1 legal in California?

  Negative. The Sl-8 has a thumbhole stock and that is a banned feature under Catagory 3 of the California assault weapons ban. Just so you will know; Catagory 1 bans firearms by model, Catagory 2 are firearms which the state AG feels are identical to Catagory 1 firearms in all but model number, and Catagory 3 bans firearms by features such as thumbhole buttstocks, pistol grips, flash hidders ect. Even if you could find a way around the thumbhole stock issue, no dealer (that includes myself) will risk selling you this rifle as you could easily switch the stock back to banned configuration and have an unregistered assault weapon.
