muzzle breaks
I am considering purchasing a Lazzeroni-Savage Patriot. I asked my gunsmith about muzzle breaks and he recommended a KDF muzzle break. My questions are: Are all muzzle breaks reasonably similar? and How much will the KDF reduce felt recoil?

i have a muzzle break from a H&K g3/91 that i sold a while ago.(was junk built from a parts kit) would that fit onto my SA m1a or is the flash suppressor pinned on? the muzzle breake would make for a faster 2nd shot right? 0 -
Not familiar with the KDF specificaly, but I can give you some general rules on MB's.
1. The larger the reacation surface is (diameter), the more effective the brake is. Can style brakes are more effective than the slim-lines.
2. The greater the angle of refelection the more effective the brake.
3. The more stages (chambers) the more effective the brake will be.
4. The more effective the brake is, the louder it will be (dispite the hype in one brakes advertising, Newton's law has not been repealed).
5. Brakes work with the muzzle gas, the greater the volume of gas available the greater the effect will be.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Do you like to here the sounds of the great outdoors? If you don't go ahead and get a muzzle break because you won't be able to hear anymore if you dare to shoot it without ear proctition. Shooting at the range most normal people wear ear plugs or some othe kind of ear protection. But how many hunteres walk around in the woods with ear plugs in? I had a muzzle break on a 300 Win mag. I shot the rifle 3 times and took it back and traded it in . With ear plugs in, my ears rand for 3 days, not to mention it felt like I was getting kicked in the chest by a horse when I shot the rifle. It did reduce the recoil but the damage to one's ears is not worth it. If I can't take the recoil of a rifle then I wont buy it.

In general, your shoulder can take the jolt better than your ears can take the increased muzzle blast. 0 -
I installed many brakes over the years. Tried most all makes.
Liked KDF the best. It will greatly reduce recoil. Probable around
50 percent. But, they will increase noise. Ear protectioin
practically a must.0 -
Maybe I'm deaf enough that I don't notice but I haven't found the blast nearly as bad as I had expected. I installed one on a 300 Win Mag and shot it quite a bit with plugs w/o problems. Shot 4 shots hunting w/o plugs and only noted a whoosh accompanying the boom. Not nearly as bad as a 4" magnum handgun.

I have one on a 30/06 that I use for Elk hunting. Use Fed. hi-energy 180gr. At the range, I am never without plugs and muffs. While hunting, never noticed any difference in noise. Adrenalin is flowing. Felt recoil is greatly reduced. It has been a good choice for me. 0 -
I refuse to varmint hunt with people who use brakes!!! The increased concussion directed to either side is very annoying and ipolite to your fellow shooters!! If there were brakes designed to do the recoil reduction without the increase in noise and disturbing of others it might be considered but as yet it's not out there. GHD 0 -
YOU SAID IT GHD!!!!!!!! My crop damage partner uses a BOSS on an a-bolt 300 win mag, and I just can't shoot beside him. We have tried in the past, to back each other up on the long range shots, but once his blast smacks me in the face, My crosshairs are 10 feet off target.
Now, If you are going to shoot long range, from a bench, with ear plugs, then there are 2 options (IMHO) Either KDF or VAIS breaks. Both breaks are found on the big bores at the 1000 yd and beyond competitions, so there is the testimony to thier performance. In general, you can expect 40% reduction in recoil. Here is my example,.....7mmm mag becomes a .243 recoil level.
