cartridge collector question/ID
my father collects FA(frankford arsenal) and U.S.C. CO cartridges. in a lot of mixed ammo that i purchased were some real gems. there was about 5 rounds of FA 27 national match with the "3 star" headstamp. also there were a number of vintage .45ACP rounds. FA 18, FA 09, etc...
one round is a mystery. it is a .30-06 round(ball). the base is marked FA over the primer, and I&P under the primer where the date code usually goes. its in great shape, and not a reload. the primer is intact. WHAT IS IT??? i have no clue, and have never seen a case marked this way. we have about 75 FA pieces in various dates and calibers, but nothing like this.
any collectors know what it is???

It is a match loading, from either 1927 or 1928 (headstamp the same for both years). 100K rounds total made in this headstamp, most shot in the matches - so this is relatively scarce. "I & P" stands for "International & Palma."

History of Modern U.S. Military Small Arms Ammunition by F.W. Hackley, W.H. Woodin and E.L. Scranton.
Volume I (1880-1939), revised (1998), is currently available from Thomas Publications, POB 3031, Gettysburg, PA 17325, ISBN 1-57747-033-8. Volume II (1940-1945) was originally published by the Gun Room Press in 1978, ISBN 0-88227-007-9; it is long out of print but copies surface infrequently on fleaBay and in other venues.0 -

Mightn't the round ball '06 round be indoor practice ammo? 0 -
v35: "Ball" is military nomenclature for the standard FMJ loading. So his reference was to a "Ball, caliber .30 M1" round. Practice rounds, "gallery" type or otherwise, did not employ a roundball loading in the .30-06. 0
