Charter Arms Bull Dog
Anyone have any opinions or experiences with this gun/manufacturer? I'm kinda interested in buying one, maybe a .38.

Charter arms is an OLD firm (1970's) and had it's up and downs, but the end result has been some guns that are well worth the money. Most of their .38's are well made but may lack the ability to take a lot of firing like a S&W or a Colt over a LONG period of time. If it is for casual use (as most are) it will out last you. I've seen some with little finish left and a lot of firing that still seemed to work, but they are light and small and don't expect them to take a pounding like a larger gun. 0 -
The last Charter .38 I bought had an EXTREMELY heavy trigger pull. This can be fixed by a gunsmith, and I recommend that you buy one only if you are committed to spending money to correct this problem.

I've got a 4" barrelled, 44 Special Target Bulldog bought used for $125 and would never sell it.
The gun is very accurate, powerful, light and has target sights.
Loading and unloading is clumsy compared to a Smith and the double action is stiff but entirely manageable for defensive shooting. Single action trigger pull is very good.
Grinding the back of the rubber grips flat makes the hefty recoil

Had one of the early 38s. before very long it would not fire double action. The take down rifle & the pistol version of the rifle have very poor triggers & the pistol version I had would not eject almost from the start. I have had only three of their firearms & I had trouble with all three. 0 -
My wife has a five shot .38 undercover that functions fine . I owned a .44 bulldog years ago that would go off full cock if you coughed ( and not very hard at that). 0 -
I have a .32 Mag.4" Bull Dog with adjustable sights that shoots as good as the same caliber S&W Mod 16 (I also own)And I have a real odd ball a Pit Bull 9m/m Federal (rimmed 9m/m) that I like also.They are decent guns for the money.
Almost forgot my son has a Undercover Stainless .38 and has had it about 20 yrs and has had no problems.

Hello, the only one I ever handled had such bad lock up that I would feel comfortable shooting it. The gun looked new but was sure sloppy. I have a Taurus 445 in .44 Special (DAO) 5 shot and although I have not shot it yet I noticed that two cylinders (one more then the other) would lock if you started the cycle fast but paused before the release. Took it to the gunsmith and he told me what to do (he usually tells me how to fix it rather than charging me to do it himself), so I polished up the star taking off all burrs and sharp edges. Now it works great on all five. I like the Taurus line and maybe you should at least look at their products to see if one fits your needs. I own several , have sold a truck load , they are NOT S&W's (or colts ) but are very good for the money , Ive been around this gun business a long time and do reccommend these...Also a point , I "carried" a charter bulldog 44 spl. 3" stainless as an 'off duty' gun for years , still own it and love it ....
