Plainfield M1 Carbine finish
Just picked one up for nothing (stock is missing) and the barrel was rusted on the outside, so I took some steel wool to it and the remaining black finish came off pretty easy.
Did Plainfield finish these guns with some type of paint? Mine has the original flat black finish on the rest of the gun and it looks like paint to me. Why only the barrel was rusted I can't figure out.
Can I paint the barrel with a high temperature or possibly a bake on type flat black paint and make it look decent? Thanks in advance.

When I refinished a couple of these $50 turkish mauser rifles I did exactly that. I used rustoleum flat black high temp grill paint. It takes the heat.... I ran 350 rds through the rifle as fast as I could get the strippers clips in and the paint still looks perfect, covered some small pits and such. The oil cooked right out of the handguard and stock. If barrel is rusted it will take an enormous amount of work to get it to take blue and look good. The plainfield is just a shooter, and not a collectable GI, so I don't see what you have to loose.
