I need to know the approximate value of a used, early mini-14. It's in excellent shape except for some storage dings on the stock. It has the early Garand type rear sight and a gold bead front sight like on 10/22's. Serial # is 180-0049X. I understand the first thousand or so were either "Bridgeport" or "Southport" models before they moved. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you are choosing between an AR and a Mini14. I say spend the extra buck and get the AR. Depends what you want to do with it. Sure there are a lot of accesories out there, but I owned one and found that it was lacking in 2 basic functions.
    1. It has a lightweight barrel= Heats up really fast from repeative firing. Accuracy is much worse than most ARs.
    2. No highcap mags available that work. To get a good highcap be prepared to spend $100+ for a factory Ruger mag. Ar mags that work go for $20 ea. If you want a semi auto that fires 4 shots at a time it's fine. Me I'm getting another AR.

Opinions are like Ah@les, everyone has one.

I agree with most of the responses with a couple of added comments.

PMI high cap mags are built and work just as well a factory Ruger mags at about 1/3 price ($20 to $40). I never had a problem with these mags. Federal Ordnance is the same as PMI.

Very reliable rifle with a very good customer support base at Ruger.
They'll take care of you should you have problems with your mini.

The only thing that is common between an AR-15/clones and a mini-14 is that they both shoot .223 ammo (and the ATF sees both of them as evil for some dumb reason). They are totally different fireams. While some mini's are fairly accurate, they will never outshoot an AR.

Getting the ranch model is also a plus since it comes with an intregal
    scope base on receiver.

Had a Mini in stainless like drobs I could not get a Hi-cap mag to work. The accuracy was so poor I couldn't enjoy it. I like to hit the mark. The action is great, superior to the AR for reliabilty and cleaning. Why not consider the M-14 if the recoil dosen't bother you though it is more expensive to feed. I would definetly opt for the AR if .223 was my caliber of choice.
