Scope on a Big Bore?

I've had scopes on Big Bore cartridge rifles for many years. Get the ones that have very long eye relief like the Leupold 1.75X6 or 1.5X5. Have had them on 416 Rugby's and 450 Ackley. Presently have a Leupold 1.5X5 on my 500 AHR. Putting a scope on one is just a matter of preference. All my large caliber firearms also have iron sights that have been sighted in with my hunting loads. Makes for good back-up.

I second that. I really like my leupold XIII 1.5-5.

You ever shot one of those before? Especially the .458. Guy came into the gun store I worked in who was going on an African hunt. He just had to have his own .458. Bought the rifle(Model 70 African as I recall) and one 20 round box of ammo. It all arrives on a Friday, he picks it up Sat morning and goes off to the range. Monday morning, he's back with the rifle and 18 rounds of ammo. Put the whole thing on consignment. Fired the two rounds and the recoil was so heavy for him he couldn't shoot it.
My point is, if you haven't shot them don't waste your money.
And what kind of bear can't be taken with a .338? It'll drop a really big Kodiak or Polar bear with a well placed shot and a good bullet like a ton of bricks.
If you just want one, well that's different. But you don't need one for any bear. Look into a .45-70 or .450 Marlin Guide rifle. Same punch with much less recoil.

Didn't see anywhere in John's post where he said he was afraid of bears. Just that he wanted either a 416 or a 458. Personally I would take a 375 H&H over the 338. The 338 is ok for bear and the 375 is just in case everything doesn't go right.
