Converting a 7x57mauser???
What other cartridges would the extracer and bolt face be compatable with on a 7.57mauser rifle. I want to replace the barrel on a spanish mauser I have thats pitted to heck, and was curious as to what other cartridges I could chamber it in by just replacing the barrel without having to change the bolt and extractor up.

It would partly matter on action length. Any of the Mauser cartridges 6.5x55, 7x57, 7.65x53, 8x57, etc. Then you have the cartridges based on the mauser case. 22-250, 250-3000, 300 savage, 257 roberts, 243, 308, 30-06, 35 whelen. I'm sure I left out alot. Personaly I would like a 250-3000 or 257 roberts built on a mexican action. It would make a nice deer rifle that could also see use as a varmint rig. Keep in mind the older lower pressure rounds are probably your best bet, due to age and possible metal fatigue. I also wouldn't convert a 93 action to another caliber. 96's and 98's are probably ok kept within reasonable pressures.

The '96 Mauser action is still a small ring action; it does have somewhat better gas relief design than the '93-'95 but I would still stick with the older lower pressure cartridges on that one. The '98 is renowned for its strength but was originally designed and intended for lower pressures than some of the newer cartridges produce, so caution is definitely in order.
