.22 wmr cases stick
What would cause cases to get stuck in my .22 magnum after firing? Do I need a gunsmith to fix this or not?

you do not state firearm type(pistol, rifle,revolver,etc...) or make and model(taurus model 11 revolver, marlin 880s bolt action, etc...)without that info we cannot speculate.

You might just need a good chamber scouring. I have bought quite a few old .22 pumps that LR cases stick, after a good brushing they fall right out. Someone might have been shooting 22 LR in it nad gummed up the end of the chamber ?

Are you sure about that? I don't know of any firearm that can safely fire .22LR and .22 Magnum from the same chamber(s).

I've encountered this phenomenon with a Colt Trooper Mk III .22 Magnum. The solution, I found, was to scrub the charge holes thoroughly when sticking occurred.0 -

My savage 24 in 22mag will fire s,l, and lr; but the cases come out pretty ugly. Never ruptured one though. I hate to use a 22 mag on a squirrel. after fireing I have to clean up the chamber, or mags will not extract well.

Blokey - I should have said "while not a real good idea, some people shoot 22 lr out of 22 mag". I saw a Savage 24 chamber rupture from too much of this, as a matter of fact, my older brother almost lost his eyeball. But as Richbug says, the chamber always needed to be cleaned to extract properly after shooting LRs.

Take a magnifying glass and carefully inspect the flat area around the chamber opening... If this gun has been dryfired excessively you will see an imprint of the firing pin...If the firing pin has imprinted the end of the barrel ..at the edge of the chamber... the ID of the chamber is probably reduced at that point and is the source of the extraction problem.... Take it to a reputable gunsmith and have the chamber "ironed"..

The .22 WMR case and chamber are SIGNIFICANTLY larger than .22S, L, or LR, and case rupture will release ultra-hot gas under high pressure. THAT IS VERY DANGEROUS!!!!!!!
You might get away with it for a while, but eventually it WILL lead to disaster. Putting your eye out could be the least of your problems.
Read Tazmutt's post again. What is worse, waste a little squirrel meat, or be seriously hurt? Use the .22WMR cart and shoot them in the head.
Sometimes I just can't believe the stuff I read here; it is amazing to me that more folks don't get hurt doing stuff like this.

Wow, OK I've learned something new. I was always told that .22LR should not be used in an arm chambered in .22WMR but now I see it can been done albeit with judicious care.
Still, I think it would be safe to say, "Kids, don't try this at home".0 -

Been shootin' the 2's for 50-years, still amazes me when I see or hear of anyone putting any shell in a gun that is chambered for something else.
But, that's just one of the great things about this site. We're here to help each other.
And, yes I have done my share of dumb things ! Can't live 56-years and not make mistakes.
As they say, Learn from others mistakes 'cause you can't live long enough to make them all yourself !

Alright, I will take your advise and abstain from doing this. The chamber walls are awful thin....
