12 ga. 870 barrel 2 3/4"or 3"

I bought a nice used wingmaster 870 in 12 ga that came with 2 barrels, both with 2 3/4" chambers. One a smooth slug barrel, one 28" barrel with win-chokes. A generous friend offered to give me 2 more 12ga. 870 barrels but they are marked 2 3/4" or 3". I have not picked up the barrels to see if they will fit yet.

My questions are, will the barrels fit and if they do, is it safe to fire 3" mag shells and will the longer spent shlls eject properly? Is there a way to look at the receiver and tell if it is for just 2 3/4" shells or suitable for both 2 3/4" and 3" shells? I am not sure the 2 3/4" barrels that came with the gun are original to the receiver, as they appear to be newer. The set up fires 2 3/4" shells fine, but I would like 3" capabilities for duck season. Thanks

  If the receiver is a 3" it should say so on the left side. You can shoot 2 3/4" in any 870. If you have another 870 to compare to, you might be able to check the location of the ejector inside the action on the left (closed) side. On mine, the 3" ejector is a little further back than the one on a 2 3/4". My experience is that even though you can probably fire the 3" in the 3" barrel on either action, the 2 3/4" action will not eject the empty and you'll end up taking the barrel off to get it out.

  Robin: all of the barrels you have will fit on your receiver and all of them will work just fine with the 2 3/4 inch shell but you should only use 3 inch shell in a receiver that says 870 Magnum on the side of it,, if it don't say magnum on it then don't use 3 inch shells
