Shipping Primers?
Has anybody had any experience here? Its next to impossible to find a carrier to handle these shipments. The Feds have a strangle hold on the regulations. However live ammunition seems to be no problem.
I'd like to hear of other attempts to ship this deadly cargo!

It seems like nobody wants to ship primers, even under hazardous material. How do you guys ship your primers? 0 -
Primers are nasty things to ship. A good whack will set the off with the resulting excitment in a truck.(you ever drive for a living or work in a warehouse? FRAGILE is latin for throw this.) Live ammo isn't the same as the primers are protected by the case and you'd really have to be unfortunate for them to go off.
I'm guessing you're the shipper and not the shippee. Think hazardous materials. Primers are. If you're the shippee, then it's up to the shipper to deal with the carrier, not you.0 -
Nam, it ain't deadly unless mishandled - manufacturers have to ship the things, you know? Yes, there are strict standards on how they must be packaged, how those packages must be marked, etc. But given Sunray's astute observation "FRAGILE is latin for throw this," this is not a bad idea.
I ship a lot of ammo as a private party. It was a real bear getting an account (around here, anyway) once the carriers learned I was shipping that. Most of the ignorant bastids think ammo is C-4. They sent me all the requirements for shipping HazMat. You wouldn't believe the BS - among other things one must supply shipping materials for testing, pay licensing fees, in some cases attend classes (at your expense) for certification, etc. Bottom line is that unless one is the original manufacturer or a distributer, it really is not worth the cost & effort.
Saxon, please advise which supplier only imposes a $5 fee. I want to do business with them! I've not seen anything less than $15 / package.
Nam, the cheapest way to buy primers is by the sleeve at a gun show or from your local dealer. I've been able to get them as low as $12/M, although $15 seems to be about the norm for discounts. If you shop, you can find these prices with some ease.0 -
The last time I asked UPS I was told $17 per shippment.
A friend that ships with them said that has gone up to
$20. That is per shippment.

I had been in the traffic/shipping position most of my employment years and thought to contact some of the people I still knew were in that bussiness. Received info that confirms all your responses. Primers definitely are haz mat and can only be shipped with a signature of a certified haz mat person. The strange response I received was from an EX employee of a major small parcel shipping co. He told me that the Feds have created a more serious problem. Folks are now trying to sneak their haz mat through without declaring it. Woe be unto them if they get caught but that may be too late to save hundreds that died as the result of just one of the unmarked packages that had exploded. This is much akin to the gun laws keeping guns out of criminals hands, and we all know how well that is working!!!! nb 0 -
UPS does ship them. It's got to be plainly marked and declared on the box what's in it. In other words "STEAL ME". Really kind of ridiculous compared to ammo which is simply marked ORD. Yep it's $20 surcharge for the paperwork.
