AR15 in .308
Hello I own an AR15 (H-Bar by Colt). Recently I got in to discussion involving AR10. It was 308 caliber and the guy claimed that it was a AR15 with additional upper in 308. I am not an expert but, is it possible to fit a custom upper in 308 on an AR 15 lower

I think you would need a wider mag well. Those Armalites make the 223's look tiny.

I think years back, Late 50's or 60's Armalite made an AR10, it was in 308. And I think Canada's army used it. It was bigger than the M16, Looked the same....But the OP rod was in the carry handle.

No,it is not possible.
The 308 will not fit in an AR15 magwell and the upper and lower will not match up in any direction.
The guy is on crack or lying.

marek, the guy you were talking to may well have been confusing a .308 upper with the 7.62X39 uppers offered by Colt some years back. I have one of these and often use it on my AR-15 LE samples. Since it came right from Colt, it fuctions perfectly on an AR-15, you could use one on your H-Bar. It is a complete upper and uses a seperate bolt. The muzzel also has a different thread pitch to keep you from screwing a 5.56mm flash hidder on to the barrel... a 30 cal bullet would not make it through!

I think MC has the answer in the 7.62x39 uppers. Some people are easily confused by all the various .30 caliber cartridges. The AR-15 action is not big enough to accomodate a .308 upper, nor will the AR-15 magazine well accept a .308 magazine.
IGB, the original AR-10 was never used by Canadian armed forces as a general issue rifle, although early AR-10 rifles did get used by various special ops units throughout the world. Only Portugal and the Sudan issued the original AR-10 in any quantity. I have read that AR-10 rifles were found in troubled parts of Africa well into the 1980s. There are probably still a few in service somewhere.
IGB, a trigger-like charging handle is found in the carry handle on early AR-10 rifles, but NOT an operating rod. Like the AR-15, the AR-10 has no operating rod. The direct gas impingement system eliminates the operating rod.0 -
