Making a scout rifel
I have been wanting a short rifel to carrey in my truck. I have seen wild hogs on a creek bank on my way to town and have wished I had a gun with me. You can hunt hogs anytime here.
I have a NO4 Enfield that has been sporterized befor I got it. The bore is a little dark but has good rifeling. It also has had the rear sight removed and a Square-B scope mount installed.
I would like to cut down the barrel as short as I can. Then add a red dot scope. What I need to know is how short can I cut it, And where do I measure from? Also any recomendations for the scope. I have never used one before. The rifel will be used for hunting out to about 75 yards.

Tools1-The minimum legal length for a rifle barrel is 16 inches. This is measured by closing the bolt and running a rod in from the muzzle until it bottoms out against the face of the bolt, marking the rod at the muzzle, withdrawing the rod and measuring from the end of the rod to the mark. You would be surprised how many law enforcement officers do not know this, and use a tape measure to measure from where they think the barrel starts at the front edge of the receiver to the muzzle. Naturally their result is less than yours, and things can get sticky. So, it's best to cut it a little longer--probably about 16 5/8 inches. This will give you 1/8th for a new crown and the end result should be about 16 1/2 inches, which is good insurance against a "misunderstanding". Additionally, when measured from butt to muzzle, the overall length of the rifle must be 26 inches minimum. You'll have to get your red dot scope advice from someone else; but if this was my project I'd mount a conventional compact fixed four power scope on the back of that Enfield. 0 -
Thanks Der Gebirgsjager. The rifel has a 4x scope on it now. But I dont like it. It is mounted to high. Also it is slow to aquire a target. I want it to be fast.

Look at the Gibbs Extream Rifle. It is under $300.00 and is based on the Enfield rifle. You just might like what you see. My 2 cents 0 -
Gap I have looked at the Gibbs rifle. I do like it and I tried to buy one, but there were none available. I also am a member of the Gibbs collectors club. It was the best $20.00 I have spent on my collection.
That new one in 45-70 govt looks pretty neat. But we dont have many elefants here in South Carolina.

Yeah, what's with Gibbs? They seem to be perpetually out of everything neat and short. Tried to get one of their MK IV conversions to Jungle C and no luck. 0 -

I've put together a couple of decent forward mount scoped rifles using the B-square Mauser rear sight base set up. Also set up a couple before the B-square was available by using epoxy to attach a plain weaver base to the mauser rear sight base. Don't look too bad after a little smoothing and a coat of flat black paint.

For hog hunting at 75 yards, get yourself a Marlin 1895G in .450 Marlin caliber, use Ashley Outdoors scout scope mount and Leupold 2.5X IER scope. You will NOT be sorry................
