Refinish gunstock (bring out grain)

I'm refinishing a Ruger 10/22 birch stock that has the "tiger-stripe"
grain patterns. How can I make this beautiful tiger striping really stand out?

  I have torched a few nice stocks to bring out the grain, but ya gotta be careful. Torching" darkens the grain , where it is soft, then with the right finish, makes for a great looking stock.

  CLASSIC, when you say "TORCH" are you referring to running an acetelene torch over it, how long, and how close to the wood?

  First, before doing anything to your stock, try out your procedure on scrap or on an area of the stock that won't matter if it doesn't come out to suit you. In order to work properly the wood must be bare, with any and all old finish removed. On 'tiger stripe' wood best results are by putting on a stain made of leather dye. Fiebing's medium brown with a tad of their black added. The leather dye stain will soak into the wood to some extent and the 'stripe' portions will soak less, sometimes almost none. Then take alcohol on a rag and wipe or scrub off the dye until it looks like what you want. The alcohol removes most of the stain from the 'stripe' area while leaving the in-between, where it soaked in, much darker. While wet with alcohol, it will look pretty much like it will when finish such as with varnish. Again, try it first on scrap.

  I use a propane torch, 12 inches away from the wood with a low flame, practice first on some plywood.

  Sand it , strip it, get it down to as close to raw wood as you can get. Then rub it with Lemmon oil ( all paint and hardware store have it. Let it soak in over night and do it again. Do this untill it stops soaking in the oil overnight. Wipe it dry and shiny. Then after maybe a week wax it with a good wood paste wax(Minwax makes some). Do it like you wood a car. Then wait a few days ad do it again untill you have maybe 6 or seven coats of wax on it. The grain will be as brillaint as it is going to get.
  
  If you want to cahnge the color use any kind of oil finish ( various colors available, but NOT "stains" that you might think. Oil finish.
