Removing Blueing ?

What is the best thing to remove blueing to reblue? Thanks....Hunter

    Brownell's has a product called Steelwhite-safe and easy to handle, very effective.

    Lots of gunshops and sporting goods stores handle Birchwood - Casey products, also. They have a liquid Rust and Blue Remover that works great also. This product is sometimes more readily available than the Brownells product and works every bit as good.....my opinion. Good Luck!

    Are you rebluing an entire gun? If you are, then standard procedure is to buff off the remaining old finish, rust, etc. with polishing wheels and consecutively finer grades of abrasive grit; or to sandblast, beadblast, or wire wheel the surface depending on the end result appearance you desire. In so doing, the old bluing is removed. If you are just going to chemically remove the old finish and then reblue it you'll probably be disappointed in the level of finish you achieve. It will be blue, but will have an etched appearance.

    Blue Wonder is a product that I have heard wonderful reviews from others on the general dicussion forum.I won a kit of Blue Wonder from a give-away on that site but have not received it yet.It also has a cleaner with it.I believe it is worth checking into.I am not saying this because I won a kit,but because of other members views on this product.Blue Wonder has a website but I cannot remember it but a search should allow you to find it.Good Luck on your project.

    4wheeler the BW reblueing kit is great you will enjoy it,I bought mine and think it was worth the money.The cleaner is good too,however the kit doesn't contain anything to remove the old blueing.CW

    I have used "naval jelly" to remove blueing...Try it out on an area that isn't highly visible first and make sure it will remove your specific finish..As der Gebirgsjager said...You'll have to repolish the bare metal for a polished blue finish...Whatever was there in the form of scratches and / or pits will still be there when the naval jelly does it's thing.....Good luck...

    I used Blue Wonder gun cleaner and a green
    scotch brite pad. It work very good for me.

    Thanks everybody!I bought the Blue wonder kit.Part of the bluing on the bolt was damaged.I tried to just do that area but i was unable to build up layers to match.What it looks like is if you chip a area of paint & just use 1 coat of paint over it you can still see the area that was damaged.It does not blend in together. Hunter

    Try and smooth the edge of the blemish with fine steel wool.Is the bolt blued or painted?The reason I ask is blueing is so thin and I have seen scratches and scuffs but not "chipped".CW

    The bolt is blued.It looks like something rubbed against it and took the blueing off.It's not chipped but when blued it looks like it has been chipped and repaired. Hunter
