303 Surplus Ammo ID
I found some 303 ammo (I think) in clips, in a 5 pouch canvas type strap. It's fmj solid point, and the headstamp says U 61 on top and MK 7 on the bottom. Is it 303? Is it corrosive? Any other info? Weight of bullets? Safe to shoot in older 303 Sporter?

It is most likely .303 British, but the "U" marking has too many possible meanings to hang one's hat on just that marking. MK VII was a standard loading/configuration designation. Best to see if it matches the following specs: Is it rimmed? Overall length should be close to 3.08". Bullet should mike .311", and should weigh 174 gr. The charger clips should have round holes in the sides. If all of the above, it is .303 Brit. Almost certainly corrosive, but safe to shoot. 0 -
It has a number '7', not Roman Numeral VII. I don't have a mike, but the case looks identical to my Winchester 303 ammo. If it is corrosive, all a would have to worry about is a very thorough cleaning of the bore and action, correct? 0 -
Correct about the cleaning; hot, soapy water is the best. If it looks like your commercial ammo then I think you've identified it. Do the stripper clips appear as described--round holes on the sides? They were usually blued. 0 -

The clips have 4 holes on the sides and bottom. One of the canvas pouches has some lettering in blue/purple ink that says Lot 4 196?
The side seam of the pouch has Express AQ 195? in the same color ink.0
