Information on Unknow Gun.

I have a gun that looks like a 1911 Colt Army 45 that was handed down to my father from his father years ago and I recieved it since my father passed away.Its rough looking and may be some type of Sample that was made to show the Goverment when they were contracting out having 45 Cal Colts made during World War 2. Its rough finished in a stainless type material and bears a stamped in USS which from what I under stand was a Company in Pittsburgh,Pa. named Union Switch and Signal who was attempting to get a contract to produce these 45 Cal. weapons for the Army during the War.Looking at it next to a Colt 1911 Army Issue you can see its hand finished and my be a prototype to show the Gov. to get a contract.Some of the parts are larger or smaller on the gun from the finished Colt.Does anyone know what i have and if its of any value.

  It could be a tool room model. You might want to ask the fellows on the M1911/M1911A1 forum at www.jouster.com. Photos would be a big help, I'm sure.
  
  This could be a unique item, so placing a value on it would be quite difficult.

  UNION SWITCH and SIGNAL made Guns under License for the U.S. Government on a ONE YEAR Contract....1943 only.. Serial Numbers began at 958101 and Ended at 1088725..This Information comes from R.L. WILSON's Book....Colt an American Legend.....

  You may have a US Switch & Signal toolroom sample....or some such.
  
  Please note: The production USS&S M1911A1s had all parts identical to, and interchangeable with, the production Colts, Remington-Rands, Ithacas, and Singers.
