ATF/ FFL Question for other dealers.
This question is for any other dealers here. Here is my situation,MY ffl is up for renewal Nov 1st,I have yet to recieve a renewal notice from ATF. About 3 weeks ago I call them up and ask them what the status is on my renewal paperwork,They respond stating Renewal was sent out in August.I advise them I never received any paperwork they respond saying they will get one out asap ,well almost 3 weeks go by and still no paperwork,now its less that 2 weeks for renewal for me,so I call them up again and get some snotty woman on the phone saying that it was mailed out in August,So I explain to her about the convo 3 weeks ago and she says " Well who's fault is that"? Real sarcastic,I tell them well it's not my fault so I would tend to think ATF she laughs and says they will try to get one out soon.I ask what if i don't receive it bt the 1st? She says no business then which is obvious> I ask her will I have to reapply she says its a possibility.Any of you guys ever run into this? I am not a happy camper needless to say.Any ideas and suggestions ? It seems to me they don't want us in business and this is one way of doing it?

I've never had any difficulty with ATF. I've had a license for 18 years, which has involved several renewals. Usually, about the time I start wondering when my renewal application will show up--it does; and then when I'm starting to wonder if the new license will show up--it does! Also, I've found them extremely helpful on the telephone. Based on my experience I think you've encountered an anomaly and suggest that you contact someone else. Are you dealing directly with the licensing bureau in Wash.,D.C., or a regional/field office? Keep phoning until you find someone who takes "public service" seriously. There are some of them there. Also, it is my understanding that you can continue to transact business for 30 days after your current license expires if you've submitted a renewal. So, since (as I recall) the initial and renewal forms are the same, ask your field office to send you one, fill it out, have the date and signature notarized, and send it in. If you let it expire without action they will shortly ask you to send your records to the record center; and if you then try to renew they may treat it as a new application complete with higher fee and inspection of place of business, etc. You're kind of in a "time is of the essence" situation now, so you'll have to take the initiative. You didn't change your address, did you?

I Never changed my address at all,same one as initial application.I spoke directly with the Licence bureau in Atlanta and spoke with a rep for the NY area and needless to say I wasn't happy with the outcome of the conversation,it was like I never existed.So you say I should contact local ATF and have them send me an application then?This is my first renewal and I would have never thought it was going to be such a pain. 0 -
Pappy, In 21 years I had this problem only once. Call back to Atlanta , explain the problem again and then ask for a letter granting you an extention to your current license. These lettrs are from the head of the licensing branch and good for six months, you'll have your problem sorted out by then. To continue in business, just sent a copy of your current license and a copy of the letter- no problem, I've seen this before. The dealer on the other end just keeps a copy of the letter and notes it in his bound book.
Just be SURE that you are truely going to renew your current license- use one of the letters to purchase firearms and then end up not renewing after all is said and done, is a BIG TIME fraud.

I believe that you can only get an extension letter if you have actually filed a renewal application. There is a BATF ombudsman that is pretty good at handling these kind of problems. Unfortunately, I don't remember his name or phone number. Perhaps someone else does.

Ok so if I get a form 7 and file before cut off date I should be safe to conduct normal operations for 30 days after the licence expires right? now after the 30 days have passed do I then call and ask for an extension letter from ATF if my new licence has not arrived?
