Body Armor ?
Been thinking about buying body armor / bullet proof vest. Especially with all this DC crapp. I think it is still legal at least in Illinois? Anyone know anything about these Nantucket vests sold on GB? I do know that you need at least Level IV to stop rifle rounds & flack jackets are useless without a balistic trauma plate. I surprised we don't see DC goers buying this stuff up.

i have 2 Protective Materials Co. vests. they make military body armor. I have their PS930 ranger body armor, dated 1994 and need to know what I have, threat level wise and its value - it has the front and rear trauma plates that are a kevlar and ceramic combination. are these level 3 or 4? it says on the inside that it stops up to a 30 cal ball & it weighs in at about 40 lbs. email me if you know anything like what level it is and a value (one is in good used cond. and one is like new - one is med. and one is large) - gichaeljor@charter.net

If a DC resident would buy body armor due to the sniper killings, then he must never ride in a motor vehicle again. There have been many more than 10 killed in car wrecks in the DC area in the past two weeks. 0 -
If you buy a vest in DC you are wasting your money since a rifle round will penetrate a normal vest,unless you have a ceramic or steel plates installed even then that only covers a small area and not total protection of the torso.Level 3 vests are rated between 1400-1600 fps maybe a bit more been awhile since I checked the new lines out.,since most rifles are over 2,000 fps most it will do is flatten the projectile to cause more trama upon entry into the body cavity. 0 -

I highly recommend u do a search for it. It has excellent detailed information that may help u with your delima.
Here's some stuff that may help:
First I should mention that ballistic trauma plates are not designed for extra ballistic protection. They are designed to help lower the amount of backface deprevation. See, even though the bullet doesn't penetrate the vest, you can still die from the blunt trauma. The vest giving into the body as its catching the bullet is backface deprivation. According to NIJ BD over 2" can be fatal.
An interesting not on page 11 of that report mentions how body armor with its resistance to blunt trauma, penetration, and abbrasion, has saved many law enforcement officers from serious injury in vehicular accidents. So I highly advise wearing one while driving (unless its not legal, then I just recommend moving to a real state)
Type I is designed to protect agains .22lr lead RN 40gr bullets travelling at 1050fps and against .380acp FMJ RN 95gr bullets travelling at 1025fps. Also should mention, that I don't think anyone actually makes type I armor anymore.
Type II-A armor is designed to protect against 9mm FMJ RN 124gr bullets travelling 1090fps, .40sw 180gr FMJ travelling at 1025fps.
Type II armor is designed to protect against 9mm 124gr going 1175fps, .357mag JSP 158gr going 1400fps.
Type III-A armor- 9mm 124gr FMJ @ 1400fps and .44magnum JHP 240gr @ 1400fps
Type III armor is designed to withstand rifle bullets (what you'll want if you afraid of the sniper) Its supposed to hold up to .308win 148gr FMJ going 2750fps.
Type IV amor is the highest rated, to withstand armor piercing rifle ammo. .30cal 166gr armor piercing bullet @ 2850fps
Oh, yea, and another question alot of people have about bullet resistant vests is when they expire are they still good. And according to NIJ they really are, the materials from the first bullet proof vests in the 70's are still holding up to their original resistance ratings, the vests so far never really expire, but due to alot of legal stuff, and various depts requesting a SET date of experation (time to get new vests) they just said 5 years, and everyone agreed that was fine.
Its a really good report that clarifys alot of myths. For instance the myth that if you use a .22lr bullet, it will penetrate a bullet proof vest, not true.
It also goes into detail about the stab resistance of body armor.
But no matter what, if your going to get a vest, make sure that its an NIJ rated complaint vest. Don't even bother with the junky little surplus flack jackets, they really offer little to no protection. However, there are exeptions with some of the new stuff that also happens to get NIJ rated.

Yeah, if it is that important to you, spend the extra cash and buy a nice one- from a reputable dealer. Try shopping in your area, if you can. That way, you can try it on before you buy it- not like the internet. Some of them can fit strangely around the arms and neck.
Hell, even Sam's Club sells kevlar in Kansas!

I tested the the military issue, 2-layer of kevlar vest with a 124gr.
9mm round and it did not penetrate, but tore the hell out of the 5 gal. bucket.0 -

We have had two merchants here saved by vests. In one the gunman
had the merchant lay on the floor in an office and put two slugs
into his back. Imagine the thugs surprise when the merchant testified
against him and picked him out of a line up.
Police often GIVE them to witnesses and others they feel are in
peril. You knew that of course.

I dunno, i'm not saying your wrong because i dont know, but i shouldnt think the law enforcement would GIVE vests out. Sure its a good idea and what not, but soon police will have to start carrying armor piercing rounds. I dont know, because i would also like a vest, but the price drives me away. But if they're giving out freebies, hey i wont complain hah.

The answer to our current situation is not to add armor, but to (1) clear out the courts and (2) seal the borders. Execute the worthless POS on death row who clog up the legal system for 20 years with their endless appeals. Recall the black-robed demigods who arbitrarily free criminals for some socially-correct reason (deprived childhood - Mommy didn't hug enough, whatever). If we can't remove them from the bench, assign all cases to judges accountable to the public, leaving the liberal POS to preside over nothing more than their offices, with no resources (secretaries, law clerks, baliffs) to further their BS. Build more prisons. Go back to hard labor sentencing. Put some real fencing along the Southern border, preferably backed with minefields. Roust every illegal we can find. Deport them. If the receiving country doesn't want them back, smuggle them in. Remove liberal morons (redundant, sorry) from office. Require comprehension of English in order to vote - this may be hard on certain blocs in the Miami Beach area (sorry, senility trumps citizenship). Any or all of these things would remove a huge percentage of our problems. 0 -
