Burnside Carbine Info Needed
I would like to tap the overwhelming knowledge of all you collectors, historians and those of you who are just in the know.
I am looking for any and all information regarding the Burnside carbine, the Bristol Rifle works, the availability of collectors pieces etc. I am interested in this information because I am trying to ensure that all future generations of my family know of the great contributions that Ambrose made. You see, Ambrose Everts Burnside was my great grandmother's (Otelia Sjostrom)uncle. I guess that makes him my great-great-great uncle.

BURNSIDE RIFLE COMPANY; Providence, R.I. Organized by the creditors of the defunct Bristol Firearms Company, May 1860.
Furnished 55,567 Burnside patent carbines to the government during the Civil War. The firm also made Spencer Carbines, 30,496 of which were furnished to the government from April 15, 1865, to Oct. 31, 1865, Too late for use in the Civil War. These Arms were used in the Indian Campaigns.

As an aside,I believe the term sideburns are also atributable to Gen. Burnside. 0 -
There is a section of East Hartford, CT named Burnside, after the General, and one of the main streets is Burnside Avenue. There's also a Burnside Jr. High in East Hartford (my alma mater for 7th and 8th grade).
BTW.....my great, great, granduncle was General William T. Sherman. Us DamnYankees have got to stick together.0 -
