.45 cal. Ratshot

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know where I might find the government style ratshot in .45 cal? I'm talking about the all metal case with the crimped end, not the plastic. The CCI shotshells aren't strong enough to cycle the weapon. I had some a few years back and would really like to get some more. Thanks!

  My father was a munitions tester for the Navy in WWII and saved a box of .45 acp birdshot with a crimped end. It was issued to pilots so they could hunt seagulls if they were shot down. I have never seen any other cases with a crimped end.
  
  I believe CCI sells the blue plastic shot holders separately and you could load your own. Experiment with different charges until you get one that will cycle your pistol. Feeding may be an issue, however, with the flat edges of the blue shot holder.

  I have a friend that had some dies from rcbs which allowed you to cut down 308 brass and reform it into what you are talking about. they did cycle his colt but I think they too required a weaker recoil spring. I will try to contact him for more info.

  I have a box of Remington .45 ACP shot cartridges. They have 650 pellets of #12 shot, and are all brass crimped on the end. The Rem catalog number is R45AP5. I have used these on rattle snakes with good results. I dont know if rem still makes these.

  You might also look into getting a different recoil spring from someplace like Wolff Gunsprings - I'd have to believe it's just a question of matching the spring force to that generated by the shot shells that are much more available (& a lot less collectable!) that the original U.S. issue items you're used to. You can get conventional springs from 7 lb, in one-pound increments up to the factory 16 lb., or variable power springs from 5 to 16.5 lbs in 1 lb increments, for a few cents less than $8.00 per spring.
