i've seen an article in a gun mag. where a .17 bullet was fired at a gallon of water and the gallon bottle pretty much blew up
can anyone elaborate on other calibers like .223 ,
.40,.45 and so on

  Hollow points yeah- they will pretty much destroy a gallon jug of water in any of the calbers you listed or atleast make a huge exit hole. The 223 would be you best choice for exhibition purposes. With fmj or ball ammo they will poke a nice neat hole through. Watermelons make good targets for hollowpoints too, as do groundhogs.

  Just a quick story here. A few years back my father and myself went out in the desert to do alittle target practice. We took a card table and some watermellons and also five, 1 gallon metal paint cans full of colored water. After having fun blowing up the mellons with some 44 mag HP rounds we set up the table and the paint cans. We lined up the paint cans in a line going away from us. Then I knelt down with my 270 weatherby mag shooting hornady 150 grn spire points. Well, when that bullet hit those cans it blew all 5 of them into pieces and the force was so strong that it broke the card table completly in half! It was amazing. We never expected that. About that time my dad looked over at me and asked me what I hunted with that thing....Armored Cars?Man....I love that rifle.

  Because water can not be compressed, any force applied to a full container will be transferred dramatically to that containor. You can blow a water filled bottle / jug to Kingdom Come with virtually anything. Because FMJs are designed more to penetrate, they will be less prone to do so than SP, much less HP . . . see answer to your other post.

  Another good one.... set up a cement block at 50 yards, flatside up. place 50 cent piece on top, dead president up, put a empty coffee can on top open end up. Shoot the coffee can with you 223. It will blow up your cement block violently and imprint the dead president on the bottm of the coffee can.
