AK 74 for real?
I have heard of an AK 47 but never a AK74 that they keep showing on TV. Is there a AK 74?

The coppers said the witness didn't see bugger all. Too dark, too far away. Any id on the firearm this terr is using is being done by the media alone. They decided, based on the case found, that it must be an AR-15 "assault rifle" derivative.
These media types know nothing about firearms. They only care about sensationalizing the whole thing so they can get ratings. Cute Katie even asked one AFT plug if the .223 was more powerful because it rotates. And the guy didn't even crack a smile.

The AK-74 is basically an AKM rechambered and rebored to fire a 5.45X39-mm cartridge. Externally, it has the same general appearance as the AKM, with two noticable differences. It has a distinctive, two-port muzzle brake, giving it a slightly greater overall length than the AKM. It also has a smooth plastic magazine which is slightly shorter and is curved to a lesser extent than the grooved metal AKM magazine. It uses the same type of bayonet as the AK-series weapons.
It could be using a AK-101, which shoots 223 ammo. I believe I've seen it for sale in this country as a SAR-3 (but I'm not sure).0 -
The AK-74 was released in 1974 as an AK clone.Its a very accurate and reliable gun as it works like the AK-47. AK=Avtomat Kalashnikova the inventor of the AK Rifle,the Russians chambered the AK-74 in the caliber 5.45x39.Not to be confused with the 5.56x39 the 223.Which was a clone of the Russian AK-74,imported to America as well as clones of the other two AK variants.

An interesting side bar to the above story: I was told that the AK74 was first used in combat in Afghanistan, circa 1980s. In the late 1980s, I spoke with two British SAS guys in Peshawar, Pakistan (which is hard by the Khaber Pass linking Afghanistan and Pakistan), where I, together with other Americans, had the investigative oversight of the US Foreign Assistance program to Afghanistan (essentially, aid to the Muhaiyadeen) during the Soviet occupation. This was long before the Islamic Taliban movement took over the country in Sepember 1996. The SAS said the British government had been approached by the PRC to "liberate" an AK74 and pass it on to the Chinese embassy. Apparently, the Russians had not shared the weapon's technology with the PRC, and the Chinese were very interested in determining if they should manufacture a similar version for their own use. I don't know what the SAS did about the proposal, and I never got to see one of the rifles. I heard that it has a reciprocating barrel, but I may be confusing the AK74 with another Russian rifle. 0 -

OK so there is an AK 74 - has it ever been in 223? And is this a "rare" gun in the US. By the way why do they need to show the gun? I think if you see some one shooting at some one in a parking lot in DC, you know that s a guy worth look at!! what's in his hands is not relevant. the press just likes to post gun PICS with scary captions 0 -
The Picture of the Ak-74 they showed on TV today had a Grenade Launcher on it. You know, the one with the seperate pistol grip and trigger assembly.
The Media really Pisses me showing something like that on TV like it was Gospel. And the man who said that it was definitely an AK-74 never said how he was positive of it.
How do you tell a Sar-1 from an Sar-2 from an Sar-3 from 100 yards?
