Suppressor Longevity

Sure he can. He's a machinist. Doesn't need to be machined though. A suppressor is nothing more than a muffler for a firearm. The guts are basically the same as a car muffler. The principal is containing the gasses and breaking up the sound waves long enough for the air to return to normal after the bullet has passed. There are lots of sites that can explain it a lot better than I can. Just do a search.

My mac-10 can has stainless steel round flat perforatted baffles, seperated by 10/32 washers on the postioning or holding rods that go the legnth of the can. You lube the baffles with white litium
grease. The grease is not required, but it does provide some noise reduction.
With grease the unit is pretty quite for apx 200 rds
Without grease apx 100rds., if you keep firing the louder it gets until it is cleaned.
The main problem is the heat!, after apx 100rds on full auto you cant touch the can with your bear hands.
Some of the early m10 2-stage cans used rubber baffles with neophrene wipers, which were good for apx 100-200rds, then you had to replace the wipers & clean it.
PS - You can make a basic can with no problems legal wise, BUT when you make the wipers or baffles that is when the ATF will hang you.
A 2 litre plastic pop bootle taped to barrel works ok for 1 shot w/ subsonic bullet - Also its against the law!

Before I say too much - I'd like to know what kind of weapon you're talking about.

If it's a .22LR - the lifespan might be... well Life.
If it's for a 30.06, then you'd need to clean it every once in a while and check the baffelplates that slows down the gasses.

But anyways, if it's made correctly - it will probably outlast you.
All a supressor/silencer really needs is cleaning and perhaps a change of baffel-plates.
All it really does, is make a constriction of gas - the bullet never touches the inside of the silencer/supressor.

But yes, it is certainly possible to make your own...

    And guess what... A 3 D-cell flashlight from MagLite, makes a perfect "can" for a supressor/silencer. =o)
    I know - I built one for my Ansh?tz .22LR rifle.

    (damn, that picture was LOUD!!...big..)

I made the back part of stainless steel which was all I had at that diameter, a brass plate to take the worst "flames" and a Delrin-rod (a kind of nylon that has better heat-stability) that was crafted to part the space into 7 small compartments.

It works nicely and was fun to make.
But then again - here in Greenland, it's legal to make, use, sell a silencer for hunting and practising.

Well, as far as the type of gun goes...we were actually discussing the shootings in D.C.. Neither of us had an opinion on whether or not the guy has a suppressor, but we got to talking about how easy it could be to get/make one. Anyway, I said a decent one would be difficult to make, and he doesn't think so.
So, I guess the caliber would be .223 for the purpose of our discussion, though neither one of us actually owns a rifle. I am striving to change that, though.

doomsknight, no offence intended here but I thought you had a legitimate question about how supressors were made and their expected life span. I've pulled my previous post and suggest that your current question would be better served over on the General Discussion Forum. They have been running posts over there for weeks on the sniper and seem to love all of the hypothetical "is he, could he, would he, will he" stuff. We have people over here who own and shoot with supressors and can answer nearly any REAL LIFE question about them -if you have something SPECIFIC in mind. Regaurds.
