need help ID'ing gun
just got a gun from a local deputy. is chambered in 7 mm rem mag, barrel is stamped made in japan by howa, has an address in north haven ct to mail for owners info on top of barrel, seems to be a mauser type action, no model or mftr info anywhere, barrel does appear newer than reciever, has a large round knob type part on rear of bolt assembly that you push and turn to get to the firing pin assembly, cant figure out if it has a safety or not, trigger assembly looks just like pics of mauser trigger parts, has a square lever bolt release on left side of reciever that you pull front out to release bolt assembly, does not have iron sights but is drilled for scope and has set of 2 pc mounts onboard. i did find one mark on it that looks like a large circle with a very small circle inside at the very bottom and a mid-sized circle inside large one and atop the smallest one. can do some pics if needed. has had wood replaced-am in process of sanding/finishing stock now....email is akitaems@earthlink.net

Mr. Pig, who has a very broad knowlege of firearms, is right as usual. Howa has been around since the mid 1960's and used to be imported by Interarms. At the 2002 SHOTSHOW I stopped by their new importer's display and saw that product line looked as solid as ever. Prices for new 7mm rifles range form $500 ($361 dealer) for a standard rifle with a black polymer stock or $588 ($433 dealer) in stainless, to $522 ($373 dealer) with a walnut finished stock, $612 ($444 dealer) in stainless. By the way, at least one fellow on a previous post seemed a bit upset that I mentioned dealer prices...so don't tell anyone I told you this!

Seems to me it was Howa that made Brownings when they were made in Japan. And why would anyone worry about dealer prices being quoted? It's highly unlikely you'll ever buy anything at a dealer's price anyway. Did the whiner think the retail price and the dealer's price too different? Guess he's never been in business. He should see the difference between the dealer's price on a car compared to the retail price. 0 -
Hang on a minute guys, This sounds more like a Howa barrel thats been mounted into a Arasaka type 99 receiver. "barrel does appear newer than reciever"

The knob safety is one of the distinguishing traits of the Type 99 rifle.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

Sounds like a sporterized Japanese WW2 service rifle with a new barrel. The three rings I believe, are Mitsubishi trade/proofmark.
The 7mm Mag conversion is a higher pressure cartridge than the rifle was designed for. While these guns are very strong and will not likely blow up, I would expect the bolt will be set back within 500 rounds to an excess headspace condition.
I've had extensive experience shooting U.S.Army arsenal conversions of these rifles to 30-06. They were issued for guard duty to the Korean Service Corps. Bolt lugs are apparently too soft for the 50,000psi, 30-06 service ammo pressures, causing the bolts to gradually be set back. Headspace was corrected by replacing the bolt after 500 rounds.
I would get rid of it or give it limited shooting.
The knob is the safety and locks the firing pin.. Push it in and turn it CW and it's on. Reverse it so the groove is up and it's off.0
