Any 9410 owners or other 410 lovers?

anyone here own a new winchester 9410? have you shot slugs thru it? is the recvr drilled and tapped? do you have the carbine or rifle version? how does it feed? i know it is a winchester and was voted shotgun of the year, does it live up to the hype?
any other 410 lovers here? i am slowly workin on the cycle of 410s. i own a NEF single, a mossberg 500 pump, a mossberg bolt and a stoeger sxs. hoping to add an 1100 and possibly a 9410 to round it out. have looked at an over under for sale here too!

I own a Marlin Model 410 lever-action shotgun.
This model was made from 1929 to 1932 and is based on the Model 93 action. It holds five shells in the magazine and one in the chamber. However, it also contains a wooden plug to limit magazine capacity to two rounds.
Loading is through the port in the side of the receiver, like most lever-actions.
My Marlin 410 weighs about 6 pounds. Barrel length is 26 inches (though a 22-inch version was also offered back then).
Unlike the Winchester 9410, it doesn't have a full length magazine. This probably makes the Marlin a little easier for wingshooting. Though I haven't tried the Winchester 9410, it would seem that the full-length tubular magazine under it would make the gun a little clumsy for wingshooting.
I love my Marlin 410. Its action is only long enough to handle the 2-1/2 inch shells --- the same as the Winchester --- but it's a sweet small game gun on bunnies and grouse.
I haven't tried slugs in it.
The Marlin 410 is not often seen. The late Lt. Col. Brophy in his definitive book, "Marlin Firearms" estimates that only 10,000 of these lever-action shotguns were made.
The Marlin 410 is a fascinating and fun shotgun. I am lucky because mine is in very good condition. Unfortunately, someone reblued it before I obtained it and they got a little heavy on the polishing wheel, lessening or obliterating some marks.
Collectors might snub it, but all metal is still smooth, unpitted and the bore is shiny as a mirror. The wood has only a few minor dings in it.
It's a good shooter but I treat it with kid gloves in the field. The only other Marlin 410 I've seen was a worn, battered, brown (from years of rust and neglect) sad example. The gunshop owner wanted $350 for it. I feel it was vastly overpriced but considering its rarity I guess collectors have to take what they can find.
I think Marlin's missing the boat by not taking their Model 336 frame and producing a .410 shotgun. I suspect they're waiting to see how popular the Winchester 9410 becomes.
The 336 bolt throw is too short for the three-inch .410 shell, as was the Marlin 93 frame and the Winchester 94 frame.
Frankly, I think Marlin should consider lengthening the Model 336 frame. From this, they could produce their excellent Model 95 in .45-90 and perhaps offer a proprietary .40-caliber cartridge or perhaps the .405 Winchester cartridge.
This would also provide the frame for the three-inch .410 cartridge in a lever-action.
There is very limited use for the .410 but if you don't try to stretch its capabilities then it's a fine little cartridge.
I found it at its best while hunting grouse in thick cover. At times, birds were shot on the ground at a few feet. This is not unsporting. Those who think it only sporting to shoot grouse on the fly have no idea what hunting grouse in heavy brush and thick forests is like. Most birds have to travel only a few feet to totally disappear.
If you don't shoot them on the ground, you likely won't bag a single one.
That was grouse hunting in northern Idaho. Now, I'm in the remote Utah desert and the Marlin has seen limited use as a cottontail gun among the sagebrush.
It is much the same situation here: rabbits have to travel only a few feet to put brush between you and them. The fast-handling Marlin .410 gets on them quickly and, if shots don't exceed 20 yards or so, anchors them well. I use No. 7-1/2 or No. 6 shot.
Frankly, I've never had a 20-yard shot on game with the Marlin. Sixty feet of sagebrush between you and a bunny makes the bunny invisible. Most shots have been at no more than 30 feet.
When I lived in Idaho, the Marlin .410 was my house gun for a time. I replaced it with a Remington Youth Model 870 in 20 gauge, loaded with No. 3 buckshot and slugs, when I realized that the .410 was nearly useless against car bodies and aggressors firing from cover.
If all I had to worry about was the occasional coyote or dog getting after my two cats, I'd stay with the .410. But one has to consider two-legged "dogs" today as well.
At close range, with an aggressor in the open, the .410 will inflict a nasty wound that may easily prove fatal.
I like the .410 in my Marlin, but if I feel I'll need more range for upland hunting, or more shot, I use my Remington 870 Youth Model in 20 gauge.

Excellent post Gatofeo! I agree that Marlin should step up to the plate with a decent, long-action line of levers that will include the 3" .410 bore.
I think Winchester let their quality control slip with the 9410. If you are just collecting them, I say try for the Marlin.
I have a Western Auto 'Revelation' pump-action .410 that closely resembles the Mossberg 500. I use it for rabbits only. Well, I'll pop a squirrel if I see one while rabbit hunting. I like the .410, just wish the ammo was cheaper.

I've got a nice Remington 11-48 410.Its a fine gun.I had an old friend in Lawrence,Kansas who collects the Marlin lever 410.The last time I saw him in 1981 he had 19 of them.I've also got a 410 conversion kit for a MEC 600 reloader if anybody is interested. 0 -
no body has mentioned my favorite fun gun too shoot ,its my ak-410.this thing is a ball too shoot ,came with 2 clips and cycles 3" 410 shells as fast as you can pull the trigger.i liked it so much i bought a reloader for 410 and a bunch of 3" hulls ,just so i can shoot it more.let me tell you when you reload you can make the 410 a wicked beast.a 3" 410 hull will fit 5 000b balls in it,makes it a hell of home defense load as well as having fun.probrably the best buy on a 410 auto ever for just under $200 new.just my 2 cents

gatofeo, great post. i grew up in new york bustin bunnies in front of a beagle. i cant think of any hunting that is more fun. from age 9 to about 12 my nef 410 served its purpose. for christmas one year my gift was a 500 410. i think i kept my parents broke buying me 3" shotgun shells so i could hunt. soon not a rabbit bird or squirrel was safe. once a neighbor asked if i knew where all the partridges in town had disappeared to, about 20 minutes later i knocked 2 birds out of the air with my pump.....it was pure luck and i probably will never do it again, but he soon had his answer.....
tocmoha....how do you like that 11-48? i would like to buy an 1100, but if i see an 1148 for sale i might jump on it. does it have the recoiling barrel?
ddhotbot...we need to hook up. id love to try some of your home recipes on pigs. i did a search for 410 and was reading some of your past posts on the 410 and loading for it. i dont reload yet, but i soon would like to. that saiga has been teasing my eye for some time. i first saw it a few years back. it did have a 10 round clip. id love to have a 10 round clip for it. have you shot 3" slugs yet? i bet that 10 rounds of 3" slugs and 3" buck (home recipe) will be a lots of fun. does that saiga have a scope mount? have you tried it with a scope? what type of accuracy does it get?
gwnelson....i would like add a 42 to my collection. but they are a bit pricey. a great gun for some one to hang on a wall, maybe shoot skeet with, but i USE my guns. rain, sleet or snow, i go!!!! that makes me think of a post......

i would kiss a monkeys butt for a ten round clip!!lol, been looking for one ever since i bought the gun. yes i have shot 3" slugs out of it,been playing around making my own slug load.i have used 38 jhp bullets of 158 gr. with some success.i was really impressed with how well the saiga 410 digests any thing you give it ,long as its 3".i have also worked a load of 11/16 oz bb in a 3"410.this is a great load out of the saiga.i also have a old stevens 940 single shot and a mossberg 410 bolt action.just love the old 410 ,just fun too shoot.if you ever want the load data on my 000b load just give me a yell.still think you should buy a saiga ,cant beat it for the money.keep on bangin boys,don 0 -

ill do a search for the 10 round clips. is rottweil brenneke the only manufacturer of 3" slugs? how does the handload slug work, seeing how its not rifled? hmmmm bb's id love to try to get some 3" bb loads or #2s. i used to hunt everything with my 410 when i was a kid. proud to say that i even shot a goose with it one time. (hope the game warden isnt reading) besides the statute of limitations isup, but i was about 10 and i managed to sneakl close enough to the goose in water and when he swam by me at baout 10 yards, my #4s knocked him over. it was a cold november swim in a new york river but i was proud as hell! i found that the better i got with my 410, the more pellets i was pulling out of my rabbits as i shot em. i hate to imagine what they would look like if i hit em with a 20 or 12!!!

did some research on the saiga. you can check out one site i found. it was [url][/url]www.clubguns.ru it seems the 10 round mags are for russian police use. this site also has a web board with everyone and their uncle looking for folding stocks, 10 rd mags and accessories for the little 410. i also read about barnaul 410 3 inch slugs. its a steel case manufactured in russia and sells for like 4 bucks a box of 10. it seems that its a sabot with a bullet inside. im going to search and buy some to try them out. the supplier mentioned was chestnutridge.com and dansammo.com.
i hear the accuracy out of these guns are great. do you have a scope on yours? does it have a mount? how heavy/bulky is the gun?
im pretty sure im going to get one of these when i go to wa this week for work........

your gonna love it !! these come with the side rail already mounted on the gun but you have too buy the mount separatly.last i looked they were about $40.been thinking about putting a red dot on mine.if you find the 10 round mags please give me a yell ,let me know how you like those slugs.make sure yours comes with 2 mags.thanks
