How to id WWII Japanese luger
Luger with hard case holster.How to ID type, whether it's officer or standard issued.Any info will help thanks.

LUGER is GERMAN...well mostly German...The Swiss and a few other European Countries used the Luger as an official sanctioned firearm...The Japanese used The NAMBU and the Type 14 Automatic in 8mm Nambu...You sure that we're taliking about the same Pistol...? Can you Post a Photo or give a complete and comprehensive discription for us to peruse...?

If it looks "somewhat" like a Luger, it either a Nambu Model 04 or Model 14.
The 04 has a grip safety under the trigger guard, the 14 doesn't. Both fire a semi-bottlenecked 8mm round.
All Japanese military pistols were "officer pistols".....enlisted men weren't issued pistols.

There was a terrific show on the History channel Sunday evening, titled Guns of World War II. This episode was about Japanese military weapons. As you and Xracer stated all handguns most likely belonged to officers. Handguns were not issued but rather purchased by the average Japanese officer. Many officers were reported to have purchased European made handguns prior to 1940, as they were regarded as better quality and generally more powerful. Evidently there was no standard issue, kind of like the 300 year, or older, Samuai swords some officers carried.
The designer Nambu was portrayed as being as prolific as our John Browing with inovative firearm designs. Nambu's designs were reported as many times being unnecessarily complicated and quite a few designs did not perform well under dirty combat situations. One model of his handgun could be fired by manipulating an exposed sear.
One model of a light machine gun had a bayonet mounted on it.
Since Japanese officers were active in China during the 1930's and actually served with U.S.,Italian and French troops, it seems possible that one might run across a German made Luger with Japanese stampings like the Emporer's chysanthamum. The History channel's program characterized Japan's WW II guns as not well designed and near the war's end poorly made. also near the end of the war they were making shell casings for small arms out of soft iron because they ran out of brass.

You guys are good.Nambu type 14 early production looks like the pictured one with holster that xracer posted.what kind of $$$ has two clips ,some ammo.What's the grandpa Nambu? Thanks
